Guide to Funeral Directors in Edinburgh

Scotland’s capital city and the seat of the Scottish Parliament, the medieval city of Edinburgh is famed for its vibrant cultural scene and academic prestige. It is the second most populous city in Scotland and home to just under half a million people. There are 41 funeral directors in Edinburgh, with 52 funeral homes based in the city.

Roughly 16% of Edinburgh’s population was born outside the UK, making for varied cultural demographics. The city has a high proportion of Polish and Irish residents, as well as over 25,000 Asian residents, many of Chinese heritage. With the exception of London, Edinburgh also has the highest number of US citizens. This means that many funeral directors in Edinburgh are accustomed to offering a wide range of funerals, catering to different cultures and traditions.

Within the city, Edinburgh Council is responsible for overseeing 39 churchyards and cemeteries, including historic burial sites which are now closed. Cemeteries with full burial plots available to purchase include: Corstorphine Hill, Craigmillar, Currie, Kirkliston, Morningside, Portobello, Ratho, Rosebank, Saughton and South Queensferry. Other cemeteries are available for ashes plots only.

The main crematoria in Edinburgh are Warriston, Seafield and Edinburgh Crematorium, to the north of the city near Leith, as well as Mortonhall Crematorium to the south.

I am really impressed with the level of care I have received from Margaret and Muriel following the passing of my husband Robert. Everything went perfectly from Philip phoning the day before to explain what would take place on the day. He took special care of Robert, me and my family with compassion and respect. I couldn't have asked for anything better and it meant a lot to me and my family to feel special. Also a special thanks to John Jones for the service.

I have dealt with both Grant and Lesley Anne over the last 6 months. Found them efficient and compassionate. They both were excellent in guiding my family through the very sad task of planning a funeral. I can highly recommend this family run business.

Gillian & her team couldn’t have helped me anymore than they did during this very sad time. I would recommend them to anyone.

The organisation of my mother’s funeral was absolutely superb. From the moment I contacted Scotmid Funerals until the last mourner left the cemetery their professionalism  was supreme. They covered every detail in a relaxed and sympathetic manner and offered advice and guidance on every aspect. Everything was covered down to the last detail and what I thought would be a strenuous and difficult exercise turned out to be simplicity itself. Susan, whom I dealt with from the beginning, to Richard, who was the funeral director on the day of the burial, covered everything, and every eventuality, down to the smallest detail. This was Alpha plus service of the highest calibre. It was so good those who attended thanked me for putting on such a good show and I, of course, shamelessly took the credit when it really lies with the Scotmid team.  Thank you. George Birrell

I would highly recommend the services of scotmid to all. We as a family have had 4 funerals done by scotmid in the last 2 years and every time they have been exceptional the level of service and care has been outstanding. Darren and his team made such a difficult time in our family life that little bit easier due to their care and professional attitude. We could not thank them enough.
