About Us
Cotton & Son is a family owned and run Funeral Directors which has been serving the community of Weymouth, Portland and the surrounding areas for over 100 years. Established in 1912, Cotton & Son has been providing families with care and support, guiding them through each step of arranging a funeral in a dignified and professional manner.
Until very recently, Cotton & Son was run under the personal supervision of Jane Cotton. Jane’s late husband Peter was the third generation of the Cotton family, following his father John and grand-father Edward into the business.
In June 2023, Jane entrusted her business to family funeral directors A.J. Wakely & Sons and continued working with A.J. Wakely & Sons until her retirement in mid-2024.
Cotton & Son continues under the care of Simon Wakely who is ably assisted by Principal Funeral Director and Office Manager Margaret Sherratt, who has been with Cotton & Son since 2005, and Funeral Director Nathan Westwood who joined the company in 2008. Both Margaret and Nathan are qualified Funeral Directors through the NAFD (National Association of Funeral Directors). Peter Smith joined Cotton & Son in 2018 and is currently training to be a Funeral Director under the stewardship of Simon and Margaret.
Along with a professional and sympathetic team of funeral assistants, bearers and drivers, Cotton & Son is a well-established and close-knit ‘family team’.

What Families Say
AI SummaryMany families emphasise the emotional support and personal care they received, describing staff as kind, compassionate and understanding during what was an exceptionally difficult time. Several mention feeling immediately at ease and comfortable from the first contact, and note that nothing was ever too much trouble, no matter how particular their requests or last-minute changes.
Families consistently highlight the professionalism and organisation of the funeral day itself, with many describing how smoothly everything ran and how well the service reflected their wishes and celebrated their loved one's life. Several comment on the dignity and respect shown not only to the deceased but to bearers, family members and all those involved.
A number of reviews stress the clear communication and helpfulness throughout the entire process, with families appreciating being kept informed at each stage, having their questions answered patiently, and feeling supported by staff who were always available to speak to when needed.
