In loving memory of Christine Louise Walsh who sadly passed away on 1st January 2022

Chris was born in 1949 to Rose and Thomas Walsh in Islington, London.

She attended Drayton Park Primary School before going to Christ's Hospital Girl's School in Hertford where she met her lifelong friend Sarah.

She went on to LSE where she obtained a degree in Economics and then moved on to join the British Council where she spent her whole career. This allowed her to enjoy her love of traveling, visiting many offices throughout the world and living for several months in Caracas, Venezuela and Mexico City.

In the late 1980s she decided to pursue her passion for history, joining Birkbeck to take a certificate in medieval history, where she met her friends Maureen and Elizabeth. From the certificate she went on to take her diploma, where her supervisor asked her why she was doing that and not a PhD, which led her to spend the next 10 years taking a PhD part time.

During this time as well as travelling for work, she travelled extensively on holidays and after retiring took the chance to visit many of the places she hadn't been able to fit in, including her dream of visiting Easter Island.

She is survived by her sister, Maggi and niece, Natasha and many friends who will all miss her dearly.

I am very sorry to hear that Christine has passed away. I first met Christine when studying ancient Greek on weekend courses in Cambridge. She was always very kind and warm to me and we had such interesting conversations. We used to meet up from time to time after the courses had finished for socials and a bit of language work and later on she used to invite me to her Christmas parties and we also met up for coffees and chats. She gave me a lot of encouragement, insight and inspiration for which I am very grateful. I will miss her very much. My thoughts are with her close family.

The comments say it all - Christine was universally admired, trusted, respected and really liked. She was the best of us all at the BC and it was a privilege to work with her.

As Margaret Wookey has written "...the same with everyone"- a sentiment shared by several others on this site. Christine was quite simply straightforward, steadfast and a splendid person

Christine was the sort of person you could rely on as a friend and colleague. For me this was particularly the case when she successfully delivered the personal aspects of the complex staff move to Manchester in the early 1990s.

Christine Walsh, R.I.P.

Long ago, Chris was Chair TUS in a staff meeting about some strongly felt matter. I knew that we were on opposite sides of the debate, and I knew her own opinion. The voting was even, and she gave her casting vote against her own opinion. She reasoned that things were so finely balanced that the status quo ante should prevail. It was a very honourable thing to do – typical of her, as I came to realise.

At a later time we worked closely together (Manchester Building), and became very good friends. (When she emerged from one tricky personnel meeting, I asked her if she’d given it all away. “Nah,” she smiled. “Gave it all away a long time ago.”)

She also made a nice stopping-off point on my travels from London to points north; and we often ate together, sometimes together with my partner (who loved her sexy Roman artefacts from north Africa).

She will be sadly missed, by many people and for many reasons.

I am very sorry to learn that Christine has died. I knew her on and off at the British Council for many years and last worked with her on the FABS programme when she was Programme Manager. She was fair minded and supportive, a colleague you could trust who treated us all, at every level, with respect and consideration. Thoughts are with her family and close friends.

Felt very sad to learn that Christine had passed away. We joined Management Group together in August 1983. Christine was a staff inspector. I was clerical support in the OandM section. I remember her to be a very straight forward person and treated everybody the same. Christine respected everybody and always had time for them. Christine was a clever person yet got her point across simply and treated people equally. We enjoyed friendly banter with each
other as Christine started work at ten and I started at eight. It
was always amusing whenever she made it in before me. She was good
Company at "team lunch" as neither of us liked cheese so we both ended up eating spaghetti. Her motto that people treat you as you treat them has held good for me too. I will always grateful for that. Goodbye Christine.
