In loving memory of John Ivan Brettell who sadly passed away on 19 August 2021 six months short of his 80th Birthday. John will be sadly missed by his devoted family, wife Barbara (happily married for nearly 60 years), daughter Amanda, son David, and grandchildren Matthew, Hannah, Anthony and Amy. Additionally by his brothers Geoff, Chris and Stan, extended family and close friends.

John was an inspirational man of his generation and he has been a great role model to his family who have learned a great deal from his strength of character over the years, and what it means to work hard for what you need for your family. A provider, generous and kind man who deserved the very best in return, which we as a family tried to do for him until we could do no more. John was diagnosed with cancer some six months ago, along with progressive heart failure we knew that limited time remained of his wonderful life. Close family cared for him at home together with the help of palliative nurse Mary. John will be sorely missed.

On the day of his funeral John will be leaving from his home in Hockley where he spent many happy times and memories during his lifetime. If you need to know the address please contact the family directly or via this website. The service is taking place in the West Chapel at Southend Crematorium. If you would like to send flowers we are using Hockley Florist – Flower Delivery by Christine’s of Hockley (www.christineathaynesbouquet.co.uk), or alternatively, and preferred, donations to Little Havens Children's Hospice would be appreciated. You are welcome to write something in a book of condolences at the Golf Club, or online if unable to attend. After the funeral you are warmly invited for refreshments and to share memories of John at his golf club: The Rayleigh Club, Hullbridge Road, Rayleigh, Essex, SS6 9QS.

Love
The family.

The Brettell's are a lovely family and have been my neighbours, friends and support for 40 years and I so share their and Barbara's so sad loss - John & myself became particularly close. On many occasions decisions we made between us were made without conversation - I enjoyed every moment spent with John and join with his family and all that knew him in saying we will miss you John
