MICHAEL SAFFERY

Michael (Mike) Saffery sadly passed away on the 26th January 2021 aged 76.

His mind was as agile as ever to the very last, it was his body that gave up the fight. But then, as everyone who knew him knows, he had a lifelong battle with various illnesses, never complaining, always surviving. And his survival included walking away from various plane crashes, car crashes and a wide variety of other adventures that would have felled a lesser man.

Mike was many things in life, a Kings School boy, a research chemist, a very successful car dealer, a world-renowned militaria collector, and a true British character. Friends with hundreds of people from every level of society, known throughout Kent, eccentric to the end, trading on ebay until the very last day. We definitely won’t be seeing his like again.

His funeral (sadly limited to 30) is at Medway Crematorium on Saturday 6 March at 10.00 am. The funeral will be live streamed on the day and also for 28 days after and the link is www.obitus.com Username: Yohe0092 Password: 761618. To make up for the limits at the funeral there will be a celebration in Mike’s memory once the pubs re-open. We hope to see all his many friends there when that time comes and we will all raise a glass to ‘The Saff’.

Mike was nursed for two long and important periods in his life at Headley Court, the Defence Military Rehabilitation Centre, and so if you would like to honour his memory please join him in making a donation to the DMRC Benevolent Fund via www.justgiving.com/fundraising/mikesaffery.

A scholar and collector of the highest caliber. Generous with his knowledge. I consider myself blessed to have known him, albeit for just a few years and from afar. My sympathy goes out to those that knew him.

I only knew Mike for a very brief time when we were about 18, he was a character then and it seems, throughout his life. I came across this announcement quite by chance and was saddened by it. Celebrate his lie in style
