In loving memory of Colin Dudley Hoad, who sadly passed away on 29th September 2020 aged 84 years. Colin will be deeply missed by his wife Sylvia and surviving children, Caroline and Richard, as well as his numerous grandchildren (James, Sam, Sophie, Dominic, Lucy, Alice, Anna, Jessica and Benjamin) and other family members and friends.

Having been diagnosed as a type 1 insulin diabetic in his early 20's it is testament to Colin and especially his wife Sylvia, that he managed to live a full and meaningful life - and in spite of the ravages of Alzheimer's disease and many other health complications during the latter stages of his life he remained a steadfast and dearly loved member of the Hoad family.

Colin was a devoted father and he provided enthusiastic support and encouragement to his children (Katy, Caroline and Richard) in their respective educations and other pursuits - and he was ever willing to fulfil the role of 'taxi driver' whenever required!

Colin entered into the banking profession on leaving school and enjoyed a successful career culminating in his appointment as Branch Manager at Lloyds Bank Perry Street. He was popular and much respected within the local business community - and was always especially welcomed at the Six Bells public house!

Further to retirement Colin became actively involved with a number of local institutions, charities and other concerns including (but not limited to):

The Rotary Club of Northfleet (he was president in 1995 and was awarded the Paul Harris Fellowship for exceptional services to the club in 2006)
Fort Pitt School, Chatham (Governor / Chairman of the Governors - he frequently attended the school providing 'thought for the day' as well as delivering seminars relating to careers within banking)
Rochester Cathedral (Steward / Guide / Server / Chairman of the 'Friends' and a member of the financial committee)
City of Rochester Symphony Orchestra (Chairman - he was instrumental in the orchestra changing its name to the 'CRSO')

Colin participated diligently and to the best of his abilities when helping out in the community - without ever looking for personal recognition or reward. One his greatest attributes was the ability to converse and communicate effectively with people from a diverse range of backgrounds and cultures. He was also a particularly eloquent public speaker and a most endearing and accommodating (yet unassuming) host.

Colin was a committed Christian having been brought up as a Methodist in his birth town of Bexhill on Sea - a part of the country that he never forgot and remained very close to his heart. He appreciated classical and (particularly) religious music - and was an enthusiastic member of the Cuxton Music Group for many years.

Due to the current Covid 19 pandemic it is regretted that attendance at Colin's funeral will be extremely limited and by formal invitation only. We apologize to any friends / well wishers who do not receive an invite or are unable to attend, although arrangements have been put in place for a live / relayed screening of the funeral service to be made available.

Persons wishing to view the live / relayed service are most welcome to contact Colin's son Richard (richardhoad@outlook.com) who will provide the funeral screening login details - and it would be very much appreciated if you could just provide a few brief details as to your connection with Colin so that Sylvia can be made aware of your support.

Please do not send any floral tributes, although donations can be made in Colin's memory (via this page) to 'Alzheimer's Research UK'.

A year ago, and I never knew!
Deeply saddened to hear of Colin's passing.
We haven't seen each other for many years, the last time was at Rochester Cathedral in his capacity as Guide and Chairman of the Friends. I was visiting as a Friend and annual pilgrim from France where we now reside.
At Lloyds Bank, where he was Branch Manager, he was my wife Sylvia's boss and mentor for many years and much respected for his wise counsel, kindness, support, and generosity of spirit both to Sylvia and to me as her spouse.
He leaves a Colin sized void in all our lives but will live on in memory and be remembered with much fondness!

I would like to make a donation on behalf of the Cuxton Music Group in memory of all the happy times we all spent with Colin (and Sylvia) on a Wednesday evening. Colin worked very hard for us all both as Chairman and Librarian and the bass line will certainly miss him.

Thank you Colin for your company and we will all miss you in the future.

On behalf of Sylvia thank you all for your most kind words, photographs, wonderful memories and generous donations. I think it was universally agreed the funeral service was a moving yet genuinely uplifting experience - that I am sure would have been just as dad wished.

I have many fond memories of our families together growing up. A key part of them was Colin who was a shy, kind and highly intelligent man with a great sense of humor. I will always look back with fondness on those times and you will be sorely missed "Uncle Colin". God bless.

Sending all our love to Sylvia, Caro, David, John and their families.

Adrian & Alison

We share many happy memories with Colin & Sylvia as our friends and neighbours.
There was so much fun bringing up our young families together, holidaying, DIY and taking the children to watch him playing cricket. A loving friend, with a quiet sense of humour and a true gentleman.
