Last week our beloved husband, father and friend passed away peacefully. In May, during lockdown Derek was diagnosed with Primary Liver Cancer. The speed at which he was seen within the NHS was exceptional, given the pressure everyone faced with Covid. Unfortunately, the speed with which he left this world was just as quick. An aggressive cancer that was just too powerful to overcome, despite dads’ best efforts and will to carry on fighting. Dad has been cursed with cancer not just once but twice. Its just not fair. Although dad wasn’t well enough to come home or to go to St Catherines, he had in the past donated to St Catherine’s Hospice. With this in mind, instead of flowers, if you would like to make a donation to St Catherines, we feel as a family that this might offer a longer term positive effect/impact for others that are also going through their own battle with cancer.
We all wish that dad was still with us, but all we can do is to try and make sure that end of life for people in similar situations is as trouble free as possible.
Lots of love from Julia, Justine, Katie, James and Emily

Hard to find the words..but I miss Derek a lot. Always a pleasure to see him, usually at the gliding club - where he was always so positive, and left me feeling good whenever I saw him. A good man.

I am so sorry to hear of Derek's death. I first met Derek in the late seventies when he was working on Pickett's. We lost touch until a few years back when we met at a gliding site in the UK, and subsequently in France where he and Julia were on a gliding holiday...more of a holiday for Derek than for Julia I think! I will miss him because he was so much fun and had a great zest for life. I regret not seeing him more often. Lots of love and strength to you all. Poppy.

Derek, you were a dear and much loved friend.
You agreed to get involved in the twinning link with Vimy, France because you believed in friendship, whether between nations or simply between ordinary people.
We have known each other for over 30 years now. From the bottom of my heart, I would like to say thank you for all the wonderful memories we have of the time we spent together.
We will all miss you. You will be in our hearts for ever.
Edith and Patrick

We will really miss you Derek. You were a lovely man who did not deserve the degree of illness you suffered these past few years. Rest in peace now.

Through Tears of grief and heartfelt sorrow I say goodbye to my brother Derek. The void that is left after his passing will be great. I try to draw some solace knowing that Derek was swift away when a cure was not to be. For Derek I wish eternal rest and an afterlife without pain or sorrow.
With love Tim and Annie
