Anthony Nigel Brewer (20 Oct 1948 - 24 Feb 2020)

I've only just been told that Tony passed away. He was a great friend - calm, kind, supportive, always good-natured. We had many (very) long lunches at Fino's, with stimulating discussions about shares, markets, economics, and many other topics. I usually had to wait 15 minutes in silence, whilst Tony placed his horse racing bets over the phone before lunch began.
I remember chuckling when the Italian proprietor of Fino's demanded "Whatsa wrong with my potatoes?!" - Tony had left them, because he was doing the Atkins Diet! Often lunch turned into dinner at Fino's too.
What a gentleman, I always enjoyed seeing Tony. Even as his health was failing, at our last lunch, he said quietly to me, "Every day is a bonus, Scottie".

I was very sorry to hear the news about Tony from Duncan Anderson on Thursday. My thoughts are with you and Tony’s family – as, I’m sure. are all Dulwich golfers and SODS of our vintage for whom the figure of Tony battling through the wind at Deal and Sandwich was always a cheering sight.

We certainly played in many of the same Dulwich teams and I always had a lot of respect for his golf: he struck me as being a serious thinker about the game, the mechanics of the swing, and with his great experience of Deal, an impressive golfer in the wind, a solid putter and a doughty competitor.
Back at the Star and Garter he was always good value, and I remember in particular his favourite story – “But that’s what I’ve been trying to tell you: there is no “F” in broccoli.”

It is sad to think that in Tony’s passing we have lost our first member of the Halford Hewitt team which reached the Final; but we should also reflect with pride on his success in that glorious spring of 1982, when, partnered by Nick Owen, Tony played some of his finest golf en route to the Final.
His total of 51 matches for Dulwich in the H.H. was a remarkable achievement, exceeded by only a handful of others.

I shall certainly miss him, for he played a big part in the many very happy memories I have of great times down at Deal with the Dulwich team, both on the golf course and in the Star and Garter afterwards.

When my dearest friend Meg, told me she was getting married, I became worried. I still remember my reaction: "Who is he? What is he? What does he eat? Is he funny?"
As it turned out, Tony Brewer passed with flying colors!

Meg is like a sister to me, from our financial market days in Hong Kong (where they met when Tony spent New Year there) until she left to work in New York (and Tony continued to pursue Meg there).
Meeting Tony for the first time in London and then spending some time with them in Deal, together with my husband Peter, I knew Meg will be in good hands.
So thank you, Tony! You were good together. Happiness!

I met Tony many years ago when I first joined rcpgc in Deal
I have played many times with him both socially and competitively and have always been impressed by his charisma and a perfect gentleman

Many memorable times enjoyed together starting with golf at school, then at Croham Hurst, winning the Grafton Morrish, and so many times playing in the Halford Hewitt. Tony, remembered always.

Rest in Peace. Tony is much loved by a remarkaby wide range of people whose lives were touched by him.

I met Tony when he first joined the RCPGC and played golf with my brother David. They were both good at golf, and I used to often meet up with them along with Guy for mandatory drinks and curry.

We were often invited back to his flat in Walmer to sample one of his many bottles of Chateau Musar.
Tony was always very supportive of his friends, and was very kind to me and the wider family after my brother David was killed in 1991. He was always very generous with his time (unless he was late for a tee booking), and always gave sage advice to me and Guy.

I like to think that Tony and David will be enjoying a pint somewhere, or a round of golf. Tony was a good friend who will be sadly missed. Our thoughts are prayers are with Guy and Meg and the wider family.

Your laugh and big smile will never be erased from my memory...goodnight and God bless...Kay x

Although I did not meet him often, I remember Tony as a warm and lovely man. Meg and Tony were always together in my mind.

In memory of my Dad Tony Brewer I'd like to make a small contribution for your exceptional care.

Tony was a dear special friend with whom I spent many happy lunches and dinners and moments on the golf course. We would have long debates about the financial markets and every other topic under the sun. We shared similar views on the markets and on the choice of wine. His golf game though was in a different league from mine but he gave me much encouragement all the same which was typical of Tony. He adored and loved Meg and must have been so gratefully for her wonderful care as his illness took away his physical abilities and his ability to communicate but his eyes spoke a million thank yous and eternal love. A lovely man who will be sorely missed but he will be remembered for ever after.

I first met Tony at his brother’s wedding in 1976. That seems a very long time ago now!

For most of the intervening years, Tony and I followed our respective careers (“career”, I note, is both a verb and a noun) in the City and West End of London. Long, relaxed lunches were a regular feature of our lives, when we could put the world to rights over a decent bottle of wine. Had we actually set out to put the world to rights, those times would have been judged a failure. But our aim was to enjoy the pleasure of each other’s company over the decades and in that endeavour our times together were a spectacular success.

Tony was the best of company, the most loyal of companions, blessed with broad knowledge, deep insights and an unerring ability to get to the heart of the matter. He was a true friend and I shall always remember him not only for the good times but also during the difficult ones which we both faced at times along the way.

Thank you, Tony, for everything; may you rest in peace.

I had so many great times with Tony. Our first meeting was in 1978 in the OAs Vs the school. Tony was an hour late for the tee off, which I soon learned was pretty common practice!

My Father had warned me that the 'Brewmaster' was lethal to go out with. Luckily I ignored his advice!

P.S I never understood his putting, but boy it used to work!

Dearest Meg & Family.. we are thinking of you all at this very sad and difficult time. You have been fantastic and very kind neighbours to us & we hope to support you wherever possible in the coming months having lost a amazing man from your life.
