I consider myself very lucky to have known Tom, and privileged to have such a kind man as a step-father.
I don’t think that Tom would have thought of himself as an heroic man, but he did something pretty brave in my mind – he married my mum. Not that that was brave in itself (she’s was lovely, of course), but she came attached with 5 girls !
Of course, Tom’s quiet facade soon began to slip, and his true nature showed through, in the form of a river of talk, endless stories and a great big laugh – like a Cornish Syd James on steroids – He yah yah yaaah!
He also revealed his loving and protective nature, looking out for mum amid teenage tantrums and selfishness, rarely raising his voice or losing his temper (despite heavy provocation from the younger generation…) Many, many times he got me out of trouble Thank you Tommy.
The things that I’ll remember most about Tom are his kindness, friendliness and generosity, which he showed to everyone he dealt with, every day, every time. I think this capacity for kindness and goodness characterize his essential nature.
As time went on , my mum and Tom walked their own paths, and Tom met Sue who he loved to the end. She gave birth to twin girls who is was VERY proud of.Thank you Sue.
Tom and I did lose contact for a while, but thankfully over the years our rift healed and we became friends again, and Eddie and I were able to say our goodbyes.
RIP Big Man Till we met again.
