Tom was on a placement at Easington Lane Modern School . he was the only person I know who got a bunch of totally commited footballers to consider playing that game with the odd shaped ball (rugby)

Mr Clish was my P.E. Teacher throughout my time at Houghton Comp 1976-81. I played for his School football team and Lambton & Hetton Boys and he was always full of encouragement and advice. I never forgot that. He was one of the good guys.

  • Absolutely one of the best! I played seasons ‘61 & ‘62 for Houghton Modern, also Lambton and Herron schools where I had the privilege of playing with and against great players like Ralphie Coates, Ian Collard and the great Colin Bell.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Tom’s passing. Like many before me I was inspired by Tom’s love for sport in general and cricket in particular. So much so that I followed him into the teaching profession and taught P.E. in Hampshire for ten years. I still have fond memories of cricket practice and trying my hardest to bowl him out, while he scattered my best deliveries to the far corners of the field! RIP Tom. You made a difference!

  • Mr Clish was my PE Teacher at Houghton Secondary Modern in the early 60’s. He was indeed a fair and decent bloke and brilliant sportsman. He and Mrs Clish who also taught PE at the school were the perfect couple.
