In loving memory of Sholto Hemmings who sadly passed away on 3rd May 2017.
Sholto was born in 1933 the eldest of three sons of Herbert and Catherine, a lifelong resident of Bulwell he lived in the house he was born.
His chosen life long career that matched his creative skills perfectly was to follow a traditional route of stonemason, developing his skills under the guiding hands of Jarvis and Brooks in the early 1950s then to become an independent craftsman in the 1970’s. Indeed, much of his work may still be seen in existence today around Nottingham and further afield.
All family members have pleasant memories of afternoons spent at was affectionally referred to as ‘the quarry’ in Linby in all weathers where younger members of the family were allowed to run riot!
Sholto in his younger years enjoyed travel taking many trips with his Uncle Harold to interesting locations before the advent of package travel.
He loved to expand and develop his understanding within his hobbies, especially photography and art. He enjoyed Jazz music and had a wonderful sense of humour with Peter Sellers, Monty Python Flying Circus and the Goons all being amongst his particular favourites.
He could wax lyrical about all the big American bands of the past including Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman and his hero Louis Armstrong
Sholto never married, however he did have a long-term partnership with Rita. I once asked him why they did not tie the knot, his response was with a grin “it might not last”, but that was over 40 years ago! . Having no children of their own he was however a guiding influence to Sandra, Scott and Mark and their families.
Sholto leaves his two younger brothers Barry and his wife Marion, Terry and his wife Sylvia, his nieces and nephews Kathryn, David, Gail and Christopher and their families.
Sholto was a true gentleman whose passion for his interests was infectious. His creative and organised nature along with this passion for knowledge has enriched the lives of his close and extended family.
