I knew John from, the early 1980’s when we both worked for Bemrose and Sons, a high quality printing Group based in Derby. John was shop floor and I was management.
This was in the days when the printing industry was embroiled in trade union disputes. One of the unions S.L.A.D.E.was a particularly difficult union of which John was a member and one time leader with the coveted title of “Father of the Chapel”. A real pain to management, as I recall it, being on the opposite side of the table.
An opportunity arose to create a small company that produced engraved printing cylinders. I was given the opportunity to manage this company and create from scratch a new management team. Knowing John’s capabilities as a union leader he was offered the opportunity to take the management job of Production Manager. An opportunity he took without hesitation and relished.
John’s talents were clear to see. Well organised, considered, technically sound, driven and hungry for growth and success and very much a team player.
We shared the most difficult of times and the best of times.
This opportunity was the first stepping stone in John’s successful career in print.

“Dallo”…
Fond memories of our chats at Broadway when you used to pop round for a cuppa on Sunday mornings. You’ll be missed old lad.
Taken from us far too early.
Rest in Peace

John was such a lovely kind and gentle friend and we will miss him. We knew John through Tom and Jack becoming such good friends at Little Eaton school and over the years we enjoyed sharing many parties, park picnics and a trip to their home
In France. Phil remembers playing football with John where he used to roll back the years with skill and a fierce competitive spirit. In recent times we kept in touch with John and Jean by regularly bumping into them on Darley Abbey walks. It was always a pleasure to catch up and John always asked about our family and how they were doing. John you will be missed. Sending love to Jean and Tom.
