In loving memory of Jean Pember who sadly passed away on 21st August 2026 aged 81.

Mum was a quiet and private person who would not have wanted a great fanfare about her life, but, nonetheless, here are a few words.

Dear mum, your presence is very much missed by me (Ali or Alsie as you used to call me), Clemmie, Bob, and of course your beloved David. You were happily married for 57 years, living in Hastings and St. Leonard’s for most of that time. You loved spending time at home and in your garden, as well as long walks on the Sussex Downs and by the sea. I know that moving to Somerset was a big upheaval for you but I’m very grateful that you were able to spend the last years of your life living nearby. You were an exceptionally kind and generous mum and grandma. Clem misses those times we spent coming round for tea and watching Strictly Come Dancing. Although the past few years were really challenging for you with advanced Parkinson’s and several falls, you were able to stay at home with dad for most of that time, until last year when you moved to The Knoll. You were very well looked after there and, once again, found pleasure in being in the garden, still able to recognise and name the plants. I hope you are at peace now, mum, most likely curled up with a book somewhere, reunited with your mum and dad and old friends who have passed, enjoying a garden with perfect weather (not too hot), perhaps with a sea breeze and the occasional sound of gulls in the distance. You were and are so loved.

Mum’s funeral will be at 2pm on Friday 25 September at St. Catherine’s Church, Swell, followed by burial at Curry Rivel Cemetery and a small gathering at my dad’s house. Please let me know if you plan to attend any or all of the event.

Dear Jean,

My earliest memories are of popping in at St Paul’s Road with my dad on a Saturday morning only to find Jean, a typical teenager, was often still in bed! You did put up with me though even though I tried your patience at times! Like having a little sister, I suppose.

Although we hadn’t been in touch too much recently, you were always in my life, helping me and, latterly, also mum with so many kindnesses, practicalities and reminiscences, which I miss.

We had many discussions about our family history research and I know you were very happy to have come “home” to Hastings where the Duplock side of the family sort of belonged. Moving to Somerset to be with Ali and Clemmie was a no-brainer though.

You will be so missed by David, Ali , Clemmie and Bob and me, but you’re at rest now.

With love from Julie x

Jean, my dear cousin, was 3 years older than me and so my memories of her go back many years. I remember staying with her, Auntie Edie and Uncle Percy at their home in Thornton Heath for a few days when I was a young teenager and she was happy to have long chats before we settled down for the night. Compared to me she seemed very grown up and sophisticated and yet she was so kind towards me.
As adults we didn't get to see much of one another, meeting up mainly at special family events such as weddings or milestone birthdays like my mum's 90th and 100th. Always, though, we just slipped back into those easy conversations, comfortable with one another.
I always looked forward to receiving her Christmas cards, which came with a roundup of news - her love for all her family shone through the things she wrote.
Jean will live on in my memory as a kind, caring and compassionate person.
May David, Ali, Clemmie and Bob feel blessed to have known her love and care, and may they know God's comfort and strength in the coming days.

We have fond memories of Jean, dating back to 1970. Jean and David were great friends in the early years as our children grew. We kept in touch when we went to South Australia in 1980 and always enjoyed catching up on visits back home in 1995, and later. How happy we are that we were able to see Jean 2 months ago at The Knoll. Our memories are of a gentle, kind Jean who loved David and family so very much. May she rest in peace.
Love from Jeremy, Wendy, Jackie, Nick and Jennifer.
