Patricia Maureen Cordingley, known to all as Pat, was born in Gibraltar on 26 July 1949 to Reginald and Dorothy Beaumont. As the daughter of a military family, Pat’s early life was shaped by travel and change, with schools in Scotland, Essex and eventually Gillingham, where the family settled. From a young age she developed a deep love of reading and the English language, interests that would remain central throughout her life.

Pat met John in Chatham, and from that chance meeting grew a loving partnership and family life together. They married on 8 February 1969 and raised their children, Haydn and Fay, through the challenges and adventures of army life, including postings in Canterbury, Northern Ireland, Tidworth, Gibraltar and Royston. Pat showed great strength, independence and devotion, often holding family life together during difficult times and making wherever they lived feel like home.

After John left the army, Pat continued to learn, grow and reinvent herself. She worked as a medical secretary, trained as a hairdresser, and later followed her love of English into higher education, earning a degree in English and Education. She found her vocation as a teacher at St Margaret’s Primary School, where she became a valued colleague, mentor and inspiring teacher, especially to children who needed extra encouragement and care.

Family was always at the heart of Pat’s life. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother to Wesley, Brogan, Olly and Henry, and treasured nothing more than photographs of the whole family together. In retirement she continued to support others, travel, learn new things and enjoy friendships, including through bridge at Medway Bridge Club.

Pat faced illness with courage and dignity, continuing to live actively and with purpose for as long as she could. She will be remembered as brave, resourceful, intelligent and loyal; someone who gave so much to her family, her pupils, her friends and all who knew her. Above all, Pat brought warmth and sunshine into the lives of others, and that light will continue to be cherished.

Family meant everything to Nan, and likewise, she meant everything to her family.

If I ever wanted completely honest advice (and sometimes even when I didn’t!), Nan was always the person I’d ask.

Some of my best memories are of spending the summer holidays with Nan, when she would look after me and my brother, taking us to various castles around Kent and using our English Heritage tickets to within an inch of their life!

Nan has left us all with a lifetime of amazing memories, which I’ll cherish forever. We were so lucky to have had her.

Pat was by my side my whole life. We weren’t particularly close growing up as we moved in our own circles.
When we were kids living in Twydall, the four youngest were in one room divided by wardrobes, when we went to bed Pat, who was a great story teller used to make up stories in which each of us stared, we loved it. We also used to entertain our family by putting on little shows. We turned our bunk beds into buses with blankets taking it in turns to be the bus driver until Mum had enough of the racket we were making.
Pat was young when she had Haydn and Fay, she was a good Mum. We loved looking after them when we could, when we visited them in Royston when John was in the army I noticed how house proud she was, when I mentioned it later she said it didn’t last!
One summer we got a cheap runaround train ticket, armed with a picnic and the kids in tow we had a fab week visiting all the Thanet seasides.
I admired Pat greatly when she was 40 gaining a degree which enabled her to be a primary school teacher. I was lucky enough to see her in action, she was born to be a teacher, was firm but fair and good fun. She helped to educate a lot of children.
Pat was a great support to me when Fred died suddenly during Covid, when things returned to normal we started going out for breakfast every Friday. We enjoyed catching up with each others news and I treasure those days with her.
Pat got cancer over 4 years ago which was devestating, she was stoic and strong during that time which was admirable.
I consider myself very fortunate that Pat was my big sister, thank you for being you Pat, my friend, my sister, I will love and miss you forever. Be at peace Patty ❤️
