Joseph Borrill (14 Jul 1947 - 29 Jul 2026)

In loving memory of Joseph Borrill who sadly passed away on 29th July 2026

Joe grew up in his beloved Marylebone – he was born in St Johns Wood but still a council house. Joe lived in the flats off Church Road; Winchelsea House, then at the age of 13 moved to Loden house which was pretty much opposite his beloved Lords cricket ground – he used to sneak in for free and watch all the matches he could, he loved his cricket with a vengeance and turned into a very good spin bowler.
Joe went to the local school but won a scholarship for London Nautical – his father always complained about the cost of the uniforms, and he was pressurised to leave school at 15 and go out to work, he wanted to continue to study and maybe go to university – considered unobtainable for someone like him
His love was metalwork and he wanted to be a blacksmith but, in the west end, his careers teachers suggested a pipefitter welder, which he studied for and became. He worked all over the world welding and fitting pipes in all metals including ones big enough to stand up inside while you worked. He went as far as Australia & the Far East but always came home, living often with one of his sisters when he visited.
At the age of 34 he met & fell in love with Sue. They married in 1982.
Joe was an accomplished chef – he was self-taught and if there was no sport on TV he could be found watching any chef programme – hungry to know how to cook & serve spectacular meals. Joe & Sue gave many dinner parties, up to 12 people at a time with many courses served in Michelin style. Sue of course did all the clearing up; a chef is an artist!
He continued to take exams and in his later years worked from an office – not in one, he was constantly out visiting sites; he loved it!
Offered a chance to retire early Joe took it and spent a good few years cooking and doing DIY.
In his later years his health took a toll but he never wanted to go into hospital – thankfully he died peacefully here at home with Sue by his side.
