In loving memory of Lionel Robert Day who sadly passed away on 11th July 2026.
Lionel ( known as Bob to his family and friends in England but Lionel to his family in Australia and his doctor!) was born in Melbourne Australia in the middle of heatwave.
His mum returned to England with him when he was 18 months old and his brother and sister were born in Southampton. A very bright boy he won a scholarship to King Edward’s and was evacuated with them to Poole where he met Rosemary.
After university and national service he worked for Flight Refuelling and then became a Post Officer Engineer. He worked for BT until he retired.
He was a very clever, humorous affectionate man who adored his wife and loved his family. Very generous in large things but would not pay to park the car! He loved fixing anything and everything and was everyone’s go to for mending things. His down to earth , pragmatic view of life also made him the go to for advice.
Bob will be very much missed by his daughters, grandchildren, great grandchildren and gr gr grand daughter.

My warmest condolences. To me Bob was always Granpa and from the first time I met Grandpa as Chris' girlfriend and newly arrived in England, he welcomed me with warmth and humour. He made feel as part of the family immidiately, a very generous gesture which meant a lot to someone far away from my own family.

I remember Grandpa as always being the heart of of the family, the centre of engagement at family dinners and a man full of life experiences and curiosity!

His devotion to Grandma was humbling and it is my hope and wish that they may be together again.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart for your generousity towards me.

I have lovely memories of Uncle Lionel when I caught up with the family in 1977 when I travelled from Australia. I wanted to meet my Dads brother who he hadn’t seen in a very long time. He was one of the loveliest people, happy and always smiling. He and the family welcomed me with open arms. I caught up with my two cousins, Sheila and Anne and their partners. I had a wonderful stay and those memories have stayed with me over the years. Both Uncle Lionel and Aunty Rosemary travelled out to Australia the following year when I got married. It was such a fabulous time for my Dad and his brother who caught up after such a long, long time apart. I’m only sorry I didn’t get another chance to travel back to England before he passed. Vale Uncle Lionel. You’ll finally get to meet Rosemary again 💖🌸
