Duncan sadly died at Glenfield Hospital on 28th June 2026, aged 72 years. Beloved partner to Tim, and a dear friend to many. Duncan will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all who loved him.

His funeral will take place at Bretby Crematorium on 24th July at 11.30. Then on to the Golf Club for drinks and refreshment.

Duncan was born in Dalbeattie, in South West Scotland, and brought up by his aunt Nancy, whom he absolutely adored.

When he left school, Duncan went to drama school in Glasgow and made his stage debut in 'Love on the dole' at the Citizen's Theatre, where he also acted in the Cherry Orchard. Duncan then spent time in France and worked in Nice at the airport, where he used his excellent French to good effect, selling perfume in the duty-free shop. After drama and English, French was his second favourite subject at school.

Acting is not a stable career and so Duncan's aunt put her foot down and arranged a job for him with the Bank of Scotland, in Regent's Street in London. Here, he met Luisella, who has been his life-long friend and like a mother to him, after his aunt sadly died, aged only 62. Duncan's next career move was to the French bank Credit Lyonnais, where he made the most of his French language skills and also began to work in international trade finance.

From Credit Lyonnais, Duncan went to work for Meridien Bank in Piccadilly, next door to the Ritz and handy for Fortnum and Mason. Duncan loved to shop!

This was in 1993 and the same year that he and Tim met and began a life together. Meridien Bank was full of the strangest set of characters and quirky goings-on ever and Duncan loved it there. Each day, he came home with a new story. The key to the vault was kept under a stapler on his desk and one day he arrived for work, when they had a delivery to find the front door was propped open with a box of files marked 'Strictly Confidential'. One of his more senior colleagues always warned that the place was 'a house of cards' - she was right. Duncan was sent to the Bahamas with a view to them setting up an office there and when he got back the bailiffs had come and it had all but gone. On the last day, they sat on the floor with just a phone and a notepad.

Duncan then went to work for Michael Djanogly - there were various iterations of the companies and different office spaces in the West End and this working relationship with Michael was the one that really stood the test of time. He just stayed.

Duncan was as loyal an employee as there could ever be and he adored working with Michael, who was a hugely positive influence in his life. In this time, Duncan met and worked with Pietro and Julian and they became firm friends. He loved working (and playing) with them - often the working days ended early in the pub and extended into the early hours of the next day. But, Duncan always got up for work the next day.

Tim and Duncan lived in two different houses in the same road in North London. Then, in 2014 the city of Gandia in Spain became part of their lives too. It is a place where many happy days were spent. Here, Duncan made many friends - too many to name - but Cristina, Amparo, Javi, Antonio and Joan must be mentioned in particular. When he was ill there last summer and spent four weeks in the hospital, their dedication to him was exceptional. In 2024, Duncan also celebrated his 70th birthday in Gandia and this was a day that made him truly happy and left him feeling truly loved. His Spanish was never as fluent as his French but he loved learning it and was doing grammar practice in his last few days in hospital.

In 2016, Tim and Duncan moved to Bretby Lane, just around the corner from Tim's mum, who subsequently moved in with them, when she was unable to cope on her own. Here, they were welcomed into a community of lovely neighbours and struck up a very special friendship with Paula and Mick, who have been a great support in difficult times. They also share Duncan's love of dogs. Shandy lived to be 22, Tommy (who came to Burton with Tim and Duncan) made it to 16 and more recently the wonderful little Jack came into Duncan's life. Zoe, who helps to look after Tim's mum, also became one of Duncan's favourite people and her kindness has been a huge help for Tim, now that Duncan has gone.

Duncan loved to travel and in the last years spent as much time abroad as he could. Duncan's life was not long by the standards of the times but it was incredibly full and rich and varied. He knew how to enjoy himself and enjoy himself he did!

Duncan's love was dogs, not flowers - donations are much appreciated to the rescue centre where Jack came from, which is linked elsewhere.
