In Loving Memory of Kathleen Frances Steel (1941–2026)
Kathleen Frances Steel passed away peacefully in June 2026. Born in 1941 to John and Florence Steel, Kathleen spent her childhood in Scarborough, attending Falsgrave Road Primary School and the local convent.
In the mid-1960s, Kathleen left Scarborough to follow her deep passion for horses. She began an adventurous chapter in Hertfordshire, working at the renowned Silver Leys Polo Club. There, she cared for the polo ponies and traveled internationally, including trips to the Dordogne region of France for tournament play.
Kathleen’s adventurous spirit took her across the globe throughout her life. She traveled to New Zealand on two occasions to visit her father’s sister’s family, visited Hong Kong to see her nephew David during his service with the Coldstream Guards, and fulfilled a lifelong ambition by visiting New York with her niece, Joanna. She also enjoyed a memorable trip to a dude ranch in the United States, where she embraced her love for horses. Her travels further took her through the Mediterranean, including many trips across Italy and France.
Her life was defined by a profound love for animals. She spent several years living and working on a farm, where she helped with the animals and her beloved horses, and later dedicated her time to the care of donkeys at a sanctuary.
Upon returning to her roots in Scarborough in the late 1980s, Kathleen became very involved in family life. She enjoyed several holidays with her sister Janette, sharing those times with Janette’s children and grandchildren. Kathleen was a sister to Janette, Jennifer, and John, and a much-loved aunt. She was lovingly known by family members as "anti-social"—a testament to her independent and spirited nature—but those closest to her knew her as a wonderful woman who lived life to the full. She will be missed, and her memory will be cherished for the vibrant, independent life she led.
