DOROTHY
Winifred Dorothy Mundy (known as Dorothy/Dot to friends and family) was born on 21st February 1940 in Mayfield Road, Swaythling, Southampton, an only child of Winifred and Len Mundy. She had two half-brothers, Reg and Eric from her Dad’s first marriage. She attended St Winifred’s School in Portswood for her primary education and later Swaythling Secondary Modern School in Mayfield Road.
In her early years, she helped out in the family business, Walter Brothers Boot and Shoe Repair Shop, which was run from a workshop at the bottom of the garden in Mayfield Road and hence she was well-known in the local area, sometimes as the ‘boot girl’ out on deliveries.

Having trained as a shorthand/typist at school, her first job was for Eric’s Furriers in Above Bar Street, Southampton. Later she worked for Atlas Insurance and Guardian Royal Exchange.
During ballroom dancing classes in 1962, she met her future husband Peter Emery. They married in September 1965 at St Albans Church, Southampton.
Dorothy gave up work to become a full-time housewife and then mother, as was the expectation in those days.
In July 1969, whilst Neil Armstrong walked on the moon, Dorothy and Peter’s son Roger arrived,
followed by their daughter Sue in November 1972.

Dorothy returned to part-time work in the late 1980s, initially as a special needs assistant and then as a lunchtime supervisory assistant at the local primary school.
She was delighted in 1996, when Roger married Tania, and in 1997 when Sue married Jeff. The arrival of her four grandsons: Sam, Stan, Archie and Josh between 2003 and 2006 gave her great joy. She followed their childhood and growth into young adults with great enthusiasm and never missed an opportunity to see them perform in school plays/concerts or to hear about their achievements.
She had many interests including gardening, theatre and music and attended local lunch clubs, a scrabble club, friendship club, Townswomen’s guild, gardening and camera clubs. In the years since her retirement she had taken up the keyboards, having previously played the piano as a child and provided entertainment by playing at Christmas parties for some of the clubs that she attended.
Now reunited with Peter, who passed away in 2013.
