I have known Mary for 40+ years through Amateur Radio and the Mansfield Radio Club.
For many years she supported and attended events that we put on.
One year the club took part in a 48-hour radio contest on the farmers field behind her house, we put up tall pole masts for the antennas, with Mary and Gerald helping.
For many years Mary kept on trying to get me to take my morse test to enable me to operate on the short wave bands, as my ‘B’ class licence G8EHX at that time only allowed me to operate on VHF & UHF frequencies. I was always busy and did not have time to learn morse.
At the end of 1993 I left BT after working there for almost 30 years, taking a nice redundancy package. Not long afterwards Mary said to me on the radio that I have some “spare time now”, so for the next 6 months, many afternoons on the radio, Mary taught me morse code. I took the test and just managed to pass; this then gave me a new call sign G0UYQ allowing me to operate on all amateur radio frequencies. Unfortunately, I did not keep using the morse and nowadays have lost the art.
Over years we have enjoyed many a conversation both over the radio and in person.
She will be missed by us all and the many radio operators Mary spoke or used morse to talk with.
