In loving memory of John Henry 'Jack' Hampshire who sadly passed away on 9th March 2026, aged 88 years.

He left a lasting impression on us all & will be fondly remembered by his dear family, friends & Bertie his dog.

Jack enjoyed a good family life & was a kind, gentle man who adored his grandchildren & pets. He loved dogs, & there was never a time when the family were ever without one. He had a special affection for German Shepherds, but over the years had several different breeds & always made time for them. He also liked cats, just not as much as dogs.

His second passion was red wine, & he often mentioned the benefits of moderate consumption. Sunday dinner would never be without a glass or 2 (or 3) of red wine. For many years at Christmas, Jack would always get a bit tipsy & tell stories of his time in the police which would have us all in stitches or groaning in equal measure (as often they were repeated from previous years). Those stories made Christmas extra special for us all.

He also enjoyed reading a diverse range of books & studying languages, especially French & later Russian. For many years, himself & wife June would travel to France with relations Sue & Bob to enjoy the countryside, the cuisine & of course, good French red wine. Jack said his desire to speak good French was to earn respect from the locals!

He spent his later working life as a ‘Sergeant Hampshire’ on Medway River Police, until he retired around 1992. Sailing was always in his blood & he carried on his love of the river by owning his own boat. Most of his free time would be spent planning & preparing his next sailing trip out on the river.

Around 2016, his health changed & could no longer manage a boat, & so had to sell his lovely “Nandina” – a 1972 Westerly Centaur, 26ft yacht. It was a difficult thing for him to accept but got consolation knowing it was sold to someone else who would enjoy it as much as him.

Jack is now welcomed into the world of spirit alongside his dear wife June & has missed her very much since she passed in 2023. After his cremation, his ashes were scattered down by the river as it was only fitting he should be reunited with the river after death.

Dear Jack, you are now sailing those heavenly waves as captain, enjoying a voyage reunited with all those loved ones now passed, sharing a bottle or 2 of wine, without a care of being drunk at sea.

If you knew Jack & would like leave a message, light a candle, or make a kind donation to ‘Battersea Cats & Dogs’ in his memory, please do so via the options at top right of screen.

RIP Captain Jack.

Jack was a true second dad to me having known him for over 40 years, ever since I met Jane. In fact, I saw & spoke with Jack more than my own dad as we were neighbours. Only a few months ago, he told me what a great son-in-law I was & insisted in reminding me that June also thought the world of me too. I was pretty choked to hear that.

Years ago, he would often offer me a trip out on his boat with a small group of his friends, but for whatever reason I was never able to be available to meet the tide times, which governed all sailing. That is one thing I now sadly regret.

Jack is now with his dear wife June, & cousin Bob, & I sense they are all also with my recently departed Mum Pamela as we all shared many an enjoyable Christmas together over the last 3 decades.

Dear Jack, a ship’s lantern is burning bright for you. Each time I open a bottle of red wine, I will be thinking of you, so I should be thinking of you often – RIP Captain.
