Makeda (Maxine, aka Pauline) Brown-Dako was a force of nature, a devoted mother, a supportive colleague and a fierce friend. She gave much of herself, not only through her work but in her everyday life, always ready with warmth, wisdom, and practical help for those who needed it. She sadly passed away on 11th April 2026.
Makeda was born in Kingston, Jamaica, to Hazel Augustus Brown and Linora Johnson. Raised by her father in Jamaica, Makeda’s intelligence and determination won her a scholarship to the prestigious Wolmer’s School for Girls before she later joined her mother and brothers in England.
After finishing school, she channelled her caring nature and adventurous spirit into social work, building a long and varied career dedicated to supporting others.
Despite facing health challenges throughout her life, Makeda never allowed them to define or limit her. She met life with resilience and humour, embracing each day fully and encouraging others to do the same.
Makeda cultivated lasting friendships and was cherished by many; her home and heart were always open, and her generosity knew no bounds.
Above all, Makeda raised two remarkable children in Zulehka and Ampem, and became a dedicated grandmother to Isaiah, Arielle, Kaiden, and Adjua, who brought her immense joy and pride.
She will be remembered for her strength, her kindness, and the lasting mark she left on all who knew her.

So so saddened and bereft … the emptiness that I feel!
However, I offer my Deepest Condolences to her Dearest Ones💞
Moms’ journey reminds us to Love wholeheartedly, be gracious in our dealings and give gratitude each day.
We celebrate Makeda as she journeys on before (us) me and will always hear her laughter and hold dear memories of an inspirational Sister.
I saw less of Makeda when I relocated from Bedford but technology kept us together, again reinforcing that distance must never keep us apart!
My heart knows that your Family will find much Solace in the memories you hold of a truly devoted, caring and loving Mom!

Blessings in Abundance

I am deeply saddened to hear of Makeda’s passing. She was an extraordinary woman whose presence brought comfort, wisdom, and warmth into my life. In some of my most difficult emotional moments, when I felt overwhelmed and unsure of myself, she held space for me with such gentleness. She listened, she reassured, and she offered the kind of compassion that stays with a person forever. I will always be grateful for the way she supported me when I needed it most.
Makeda’s love for her children, Zulehka and Ampem, was unwavering, and watching her step into the role of grandmother was truly beautiful. She embraced Isaiah, Arielle, Kaiden, and Adjua with such joy and devotion, her pride in them was radiant. Her legacy lives on so clearly in the family she nurtured and the love she sowed.
Though her passing brings deep sorrow, I also celebrate the remarkable life she lived, a life marked by strength, kindness, and a spirit that uplifted so many. May her soul rest in freedom, and may her memory continue to be a blessing and a source of comfort. I’m holding you all in my thoughts and sending love as you navigate this profound loss.
