In loving memory of Barry Cowell who sadly passed away on 5th March 2026. Our dad could be remembered for many things, his love of Formula1, bait digging, fishing, 5* cooking, or the fact he could talk the hind legs off a donkey. He was loved by many family and friends. If you’ve met him you can’t forget him. His family would like to invite you to his funeral on Thursday 9th of April 2026. We will be leaving from his home on Eastern Esplanade approximately 10:30am, the corner of Chelsea Avenue SS12YH, travelling via Southend seafront to St. Helen’s Church, Milton Road SS07JP where a service will be held at 11am. The burial will be taking place at Sutton Road Cemetery SS25PX at approximately 12:15, following this we will be holding a wake at Ambleside Social Club (sports bar) SS12UP from 1pm. We would love as many people to come and pay their respects and share their memories of our dad with us. We kindly request no further flowers and any donations to be made to the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) link attached, A charity Barry chose, mainly for being out at sea his whole life and secondly as payment for stalking the lifeboat station for the past however many years with his binoculars, I think we can all agree he never missed an event! He was forever grateful for the work RNLI did. Thank you for all your kind messages, calls and thoughts the family have received since he sadly passed away. It’s with a heavy heart we are writing these messages and being old school we don’t have all year to go through his address book so please pass the message to those who knew him that they are all welcome x x x

It would be most fitting as Barry supported the RNLI for many years.

Barry Cowell! What do you say? He was forthright, outspoken, opinionated, generous and passionate about his fishing, formula 1 and spurs. I first met Barry about 60 years ago on the pier like so many did. I actually heard him coming before we met. We developed a friendship over the years and fished many times in teams together. He was always ahead of the game with his fishing and was very competitive. I guess if he was still here today he would be trying to catch the first garfish of the season from the pier. Barry has been a very good friend over the years and I will miss our chats and a glass of wine with him around his flat. God bless Barry. RIP mate.

Bill Gilson donated in memory of Barry

Our association with Barry was over 40 years, initially as a customer and latterly as part of our packing team, to which he was a valued member joining in with all the banter. He supplied us with numerous stories even if we did hear them many times over.
Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and loved ones.
From Bill and Glyn Gilson and families.

grew up with Barry , fishing Southend Pier and around the coast. I always remember him in that he would do anything to help you , although he would be a bit loud in doing that.
I now live in Canada but every time I came home he would cook me a gourmet meal , and his shrimps were the best. I wish I could be at his funeral but I will be there in sprit and remembrance. Rest in Peace Barry

I worked for Barry digging bait 40 years ago. He was always fair and we had plenty of laughs. I fished against him many times and he was very difficult to beat. A very talented angler.
In the last few years we had regular chats and he hadn’t really changed at all except if anything he had got even louder ! He will be missed by many.

More than fifty years ago Barry would sit transfixed watching the flounders, eels and other species in my marine fish tank. He was one of life’s real characters. Always something to learn when I fished with him. He was the best shore angler never to fish for England.

Still pinching myself to be sure you’re not there. Thank you Barry for your kindness and friendship. Your sponsorship of the schools teams and mayors team at the Gravesend experiment in recent years is just a small example of your generous nature. Going to miss those never ending phone calls with you about all things angling. Mick

Barry was a true character always good for a laugh with his jokes He loved going and watching the F1 racing, especially the Porsches. He was an outstanding fisherman, and was well known on that circle. He will be sorely missed, but not forgotten. RIP Bazza. Ian and Julie and the Australian contingent.
