In loving memory of Edwin Scarlin who sadly passed away on 17th March 2026.
A tribute to Eddie Scarlin by his children.
Edwin Scarlin was born in September 1945 and grew up in Barrow in Furness with his parents and brother, Brendon. He studied to become a Chemical Engineer at Imperial College London and joined Blue Circle after graduating.
Eddie met Sue at a mutual friend’s party and they were married on the 16th April 1979. They moved to Wateringbury in the early 80s, after Eddie was in the process of moving back to the UK from Nigeria, where he had helped set up a cement factory. Alice was born in November 1986 and Hugh almost exactly 2 years later in November 1988.
After some years Eddie left Blue Circle and joined Sue in her profession and workplace, becoming a Chemistry Teacher at Invicta Grammar School. They both loved to travel and the family of four took many memorable trips during the school summer holidays over the years. Eddie particularly loved narrowboats and several family adventures were undertaken on the canals.
Eddie was known by all as a very laid back, calm, kind and caring man to his family and friends. His hobbies included watching formula one, supporting Manchester United and using technology to help at Church.
He became a widower in 2007 when Sue sadly passed away but was supported by his family, his Church family and found solace in his faith.
St John the Baptist Church was a big part of his life and he was church warden for several years. At different points he was also on the PCC, the sound team, helped to compile the weekly newsletter and helped prepare the audio visual element of Messy Church. He was also a member of the Local History Society, and became the treasurer.
In June 2024 Eddie suffered a twisted bowel which necessitated a major operation and over 5 months in hospital and cottage hospitals before he was able to come home, and then he spent around 15 months at home. Eddie’s health deteriorated in early March and he was supported at home by the NHS district nurses, his carers and his family. Eddie passed away peacefully on 17th March with his family at his side.
