Joan Violet Storey (nee McDonald) was born in Netley Abbey a few weeks after the outbreak of the 2nd world war, to Albert (Mac) and Violet McDonald. Seven years later she was joined by Susan (Susie) to complete the family.
Joan attended Netley Infants school, followed by Butlocks Primary school and then onto Hamble Secondary School. When Joan left school at 15 she went to work for Shephard and Hedger, in Southampton, making curtains for the big ocean liners. She went onto to work as a tracer for Archiprint services and went to Art College in Southampton.
She met John Storey in Netley Abbey where both families lived and they enjoyed a fun time going to dances classes and the Guildhall dances in Southampton. They were married in 1960 while John was completing his national service at RAF Calshot. They then both worked for Folland Aircraft in Hamble , Joan as a Technical Illustrator. John moved to IBM at Hursley and they relocated to Chandlers Ford. They went on to have 2 children, Teresa in 1966 and then Neil in 1969 and now also have 2 grandchildren, David and Sarah. Most of their married life they lived in Waterlooville and in 2012 moved to Portchester.
Joan was first and foremost a wife and mother, having given up full time employment, and was always there for the family, cooking and taking the children to school and being there to look after them as they grew up.
She was a talented artist and teacher of china painting; her artwork was loved by everyone who saw it. She was also a wonderful seamstress and made many clothes for family and friends including her daughter’s wedding dress. She loved her ability to pass on her love of sewing to her granddaughter Sarah. After John retired, they loved walking and traveling and had many wonderful holidays across the world.
They celebrated their 60th wedding in 2020 just before COVID and their 65th in 2025, and had a card each time from two different Monarchs.
Sadly, Joan had a stroke in 2021, which she recovered well from due to her fitness from walking. Then in the summer of 2025, after a number of stays in QA, she was diagnosed with bone cancer and passed away on the 19th February 2026 in Parker Meadows Care Home, Fareham.
She will be sadly missed by all her family and friends xx
