Thanks for remembering dad.
In loving memory of John Noel O'Sullivan who sadly passed away on 24th January 2026
John O’Sullivan, known as “Sean” to some and “Popsie” to many was born in Macroom, Cork and came to England in the 1950s to join the NHS. He was right at the beginning of the movement to improve public health and dental hygiene across the UK, incredibly in the early 1950s more than 75% of the adult population had no natural teeth.
A dentist for more than 40 years Dad loved his work taking great pride in restoring the smile for every patient, he often went above and beyond counting the little ones’ little teeth and warning of the dangers of too many sweets. He also loved his team, all his nurses and fellow dentists at the surgery on Whitmore Way in Basildon.
A man of many passions whether it was fishing, swimming, building cars racing cars, gardening, building things , fixing things, windsurfing, playing squash or most importantly golf (his best handicap was 1) he embraced life with a full and fervent delight. Fortunately for him our Mum, Elspeth/Elpie was a relatively patient woman and after 7 years of “courtin” as he called it, he finally agreed it was time they got hitched - and they were married for 57 years before Mum died in 2022.
He was a brilliant dad and our endless summers of childhood seemed to always be exciting, whether it was camping, beach time, epic car journeys through France and Spain or even the thrill ride to get to swimming on time. Of course there are also the memories of sitting in the car with a bottle of coke and a bag of crisps while they enjoyed a quiet child free pint in a pub.
In later years, it was his greatest pleasure of the week to play dominoes - with “The Old Boys” on Tuesdays, and on Fridays and Sundays, with his daughters and granddaughters, having something to look forward to kept him young and mentally sharp.
We all hope for a great life and that when it’s done, the end comes peacefully in our sleep in our own bed, and so it was for dad at “Chellow Dene,” his happy home for more than 60 years. Folly Chase was more than a place to live, it was where Mum and Dad lived their best life together; where 2 of the 3 of us kids were born; where fantastic neighbours were (and still are) just over the way, always ready to help out.
Love you Dad… miss you.
Please leave any great memories of Dad here, we have found that no two are the same.
