In loving memory of Mary Jones who sadly passed away on 7th January 2026. Loving wife to Bill (deceased), mother to Wayne (deceased), Dean and Debbie. Nan to Holly, Scott, Ryan and Luke. Great nanny to Isabell, Freddie, Lyle, Ayda, Oliver and Nelly.
Mary was born on 6th September 1928 and lived to the grand age of 97. She was one of ten children born to Ben Bartlett and Gladys Colley. She was a studious pupil at school and boasted of being the class monitor. She married Bill in 1950, and they had a close and loving relationship. She was so proud to receive a letter from the queen on the event of their 60th anniversary.
Mary worked in restaurants in London during her 20’s but became a housewife after her marriage to Bill, a caring mum, dedicated to her three children, and encouraged education and a sense of what was right and wrong. She was enormously proud of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She worked for many years in a playschool in Butts Road Sholing, Southampton, and many of the children who attended recall her now, even though they have children of their own.
Sadly, Bill passed away with Alzheimer’s disease in 2012. Also, her eldest son Wayne passed away in 2020 following an illness. By that time Mary was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s herself and when her mobility deteriorated, reluctantly she moved into Speedwell Court Care home in West End, Southampton in 2019, one of the first residents there.
Mary was happy throughout her time at the care home. She was always smiling and giving her familiar ‘thumbs up’ gesture. This was down to the frequent visits to her by the whole family, including Dean, Lynn, Debbie, her neighbour Ann and her brother Ernie who is also resident at the care home, plus her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and visits from her nieces from America, Ginger and Stef.
The staff at Speedwell Court were especially kind to her, and for that the family will be eternally grateful.
Rest in peace mum. You’re with Dad and Wayne now. Give them our love. Miss you so much. xxxxxxxxxxx
