David Popple passed away peacefully on 12 December 2025, aged 79.
He was the deeply loved husband of Linda for nearly 58 years, a devoted father to Ian and Chris, and a much loved father-in-law to Melissa. David was an adored grandfather to Ella, Ethan, Logan, and Lily, each of whom brought him immense pride and joy. He was also a cherished brother to Geoff and Melvyn and a constant source of support and friendship to his wider family.
Originally from Darlington in County Durham, David and Linda built a full and happy life together in the Dorking area, where they became well known and well loved members of the community.
David gave generously of his time and energy to others. He dedicated many years to the Scout Association, leading Venture Scouts and passionately advocating for young people. Among his proudest moments was leading the 1991 Surrey Contingent to the World Scout Jamboree in South Korea, an experience that reflected his commitment to opportunity, leadership, and international friendship. His influence on the lives of young people will be felt for generations.
A faithful man, David’s life was guided by his Christian faith. He grew up in the Salvation Army, where his love of music began, playing in the band from a young age and carrying that passion throughout his life. A keen and accomplished musician, David proudly played the Last Post at the Remembrance Day ceremony in Dorking for over 30 years, an honour he carried with great humility and respect.
David loved to travel and spent part of his working life in the United States. Wherever he went, he formed lasting friendships. He loved people, valued loyalty, and was known for his kindness. He never had a bad word to say about anyone and lived with quiet integrity, warmth, and grace.
David will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His legacy is one of love, service, faith, and kindness, and he will be remembered always.
