In loving memory of Bill Markham who sadly passed away on 17th October 2025

Only a few years apart, we grew up together, visited one another’s homes, and spent time at local cricket matches in Haworth and Oxenhope. I could go out there and play the game. Bill couldn’t. We grew up, and I travelled around the world. Freely. Bill’s wheelchair-bound travel was much more restrictive, but he did get to places. I recall a trip he made to Finland, thanks to the massive support of his family and the accompaniment of his sister, Lisa. While his physical disability visibly characterized his life, it never stopped him from commenting on the world around him. He had a brilliant mind, weaving social justice with progressive rock, football and politics. Our conversations were splendidly punctuated with his references to historical dates of kings and queens, battles and books; and the names, and exacting details of music recordings by Peter Gabriel, one of his favourites, and others. Those were splendid times, my cousin and friend. Thank you, Bill.

I always enjoyed my time with Bill and hearing his often amusing, frank and sometimes startling stories and opinions. And of course for me he was a strong link wIth my Maggie. She was very fond of him and anyone Maggie liked carried a strong seal of approval . My love and thoughts Bill. The other Bill

Bill you touched many peoples lives. You will always be in my memory and you were a big part of my life for many years. You had a big heart and despite many difficulties you were thoughtful of others. Helen

I admired your “solid” principles Bill, you believed in fairness, justice & equal opportunities for all, which you articulated with passion & commitment whenever the situation demanded it. Equal to this, you faced your own not inconsiderable difficulties with dignity, stoicism & a remarkable degree of selflessness. I will miss you !

Dear Bill, you are remembered by me with much fondness. You made me laugh at, and reflect on things in equal measure. We also did many things together, but it was our chats on such a wide range of topics that will leave a lasting impression on me. You're a good man Bill. Take care, Richard, your favourite Geordie.
