Shirley Ann Crawford (28 December 1949 – 2025)
Shirley Ann Crawford, a beloved daughter, mother, grandmother, and sister, passed away in 2025 at the age of 75, just four months after being diagnosed with a brain tumour. Her life was a radiant example of resilience, love, and an unyielding commitment to both people and animals.
Shirley faced her illness with extraordinary courage, never complaining or questioning its unfairness, and passed on her own terms, surrounded by the love she so generously gave throughout her life.
Born on 28 December 1949 in Wales, Shirley grew up alongside her two brothers, Richard and Karl. At a young age, her family moved to South Africa, where she spent much of her childhood before returning to Wales in her late teens. These early years shaped her adventurous spirit and adaptability, qualities that defined her life.
Settling in Nottingham, Shirley became a devoted single mother to her three sons, Paul, Darren, and Ashley. Raising them while working three jobs, she never once complained, embodying strength and selflessness that inspired everyone around her.
Shirley’s heart was as boundless as her energy. With her partner, Barry, she embraced new adventures, moving to Devon for a decade and then to Spain for 15 years. Upon returning to Nottingham, she became affectionately known as “Little Nana,” to her granddaughter, Anaïs. Shirley’s warmth and love lit up Anaïs’s life and they spent many cherished moments together playing.
Her passion for animals was a cornerstone of her life. Shirley founded cat and dog rescues, saving thousands of animals from the streets, nurturing them with care, and finding them loving homes. Her compassion created a legacy that touched countless lives, both human and animal.
In her final months. Shirley faced her brain tumour with remarkable fortitude. Her sons, friends, granddaughter, daughter-in-law, and her devoted full-time carer, Gloria, surrounded her with love and support, ensuring she felt cherished until the end.
Shirley’s strength, humour, and grace never wavered. She lived life fully, loved deeply, and left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Her legacy lives on in the love she shared, and through those she loved.
