In loving memory of Michael Bray who sadly passed away on 27th September 2025
Michael Peter Bray (1947–2025)
Michael Bray was, in equal measure, a formidable legal mind and a gentle, generous soul. He died in London on 27 September 2025, aged 78, leaving behind a legacy that spans global finance, good governance in the social sector, and most importantly a family who adored him.
Born in 1947, Michael read law and, in 1970, joined Coward Chance, later Clifford Chance, where his talent and calm authority saw him become a partner in 1976. Across more than four decades he helped shape modern banking and financial practice, advising on complex, high-risk transactions from capital markets to project and structured finance, insolvency and restructuring. His colleagues trusted his judgement; clients prized his clarity; and generations of young lawyers learned their craft under his mentorship.
Michael held two of Clifford Chance’s most senior roles at pivotal moments for the firm: Global Head of Finance & Capital Markets (1995–2000) and Global Managing Partner (2000–2002). He was instrumental in developing its presence Gloablly, work that reflected his international outlook and his gift for building bridges across cultures and jurisdictions.
After retiring as a partner in 2012 (continuing as a consultant until 2015), Michael brought his experience to the Grimaldi Alliance, where he remained valued not only for professional excellence but for a personal style marked by grace, elegance and unfailing support for colleagues and friends. His presence, steadfast, wise, and encouraging left a mark on the Alliance and on everyone privileged to work alongside him.
Beyond the law, Michael devoted time and talent to organisations that lift others. In the Junior Achievement (JA) family he served as Chair of JA Europe and became the first elected Chair of the Governance Committee for JA Worldwide. He helped build the governance architecture that unites 100+ national entities with six regional operating centres; a framework designed not only for accountability but for trust and nimble, entrepreneurial action. In recognition of that contribution, JA has established the Michael Bray Award for Good Governance to honour the principles he embodied: effective stewardship, resilience, and the quiet courage to do the right thing.
Michael also served as Secretary and Treasurer of the Voluntary Solidarity Fund (VSF), an initiative addressing inequality. At VSF he brought rigour and heart in equal measure, always ready with a thoughtful solution, always reminding colleagues of the human purpose behind process. His guidance strengthened the London Chapter’s impact, including support for charities such as Providence Row, Women at the Well, the Felix Project, and the Prison Advice and Care Trust.
Those closest to Michael knew that, for all the titles and transactions, his true north was family. He was an amazingly loving husband to Gabrielle; a devoted father to Natasha and Samantha; and a wonderful stepfather to Melanie, Michael, and Cheryl. He delighted in being “Grandpa Mike” to Jamie, India Rose, Ollie, Toby, Hendrix, Jette, Vinny, Sully, and Parker, each grandchild a source of pride and pure joy. His counsel was steady, his humour witty, and his presence at a dinner table, on a long walk, or at a school concert always reassuring in that uniquely Michael way.
Friends and colleagues speak of a man who made rooms calmer and people braver. He listened first, chose his words with care, and carried responsibility calmly, as if the real work were to help others do theirs. He believed in excellence without ego, in structures that enable people to flourish, and in service as the natural companion to success. In his professional life he set standards; in his charitable work he helped build the scaffolding for good; in his family he gave love, time, and an example to follow.
Michael’s life contained multitudes; lawyer and leader, mentor and moderniser, trustee and friend, husband, father, and grandfather. He leaves a profession better led, organisations better governed, communities better served, and a family bound by the love he poured into it.
He will be remembered for his integrity, his wisdom, and the kindness that ran like a quiet current through everything he did. Above all, he will be remembered with love.

Mike visiting Gabby at Oxford. He always made the rather stuffy, mid-week formal dinners so much more fun. And he always brought an excellent bottle of wine.
9 July 2025 - Lincoln’s Inn. Ciao Michael, you will be forever with us!
