On September 22nd, Rodney Smith, left us, having first felt "wrong" during the previous December.

He left behind the worries and the depression of the death sentence that is mesothelioma (yet to be proven absolutely) - cancer of the membranes in the chest which surround all of the internal organs, particularly the lungs. It's inoperable, because it is so general in its nature, and it does not respond well to any available treatments.

Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos, which was rife in the service passageways of the buildings in which Rod worked for many years. It is notoriously difficult to diagnose conclusively, and such diagnosis is usually only completed post mortem.

His children did their best to support him. His neighbours went well beyond what we could ever have asked of them to assist. His carers, once Rod was persuaded of the sense of accepting outside help, made a huge contribution and helped maintain his independence far longer than might otherwise have been possible.

He left on his own terms. He was at home, and he was not in any pain.

He worked for the BBC for nearly three decades. Everything you have ever watched in colour on BBC1 or BBC2 in the analogue days was broadcast through systems he had designed and probably had a hand in building.

He leaves behind family and friends he loved dearly and who loved him in return.

I didn't really see much of Rod at work, he was with VT and I was with telecine, until the two sections were combined and we shared an office. I remember him once supplying a "heart and lung transplant" for the office fridge from his "tailboard supplies". He was always very cheerful and he accepted his fate with his usual pragmatic approach.

The eccentric demeanour and witty sense of humour transported me onto Rodders planet, a place which I loved to visit. It was always filled with fun and cracking banter. However, to crown it all, he was also a kind and caring gentleman to be around. Capitan, rest in peace. 'Lolly.' Ex secretary and friend.

my initial tiem on attachement to SCPD TRU was with Rod out at 252 Western Avenue on the accpetance of the new VPR2 1" VTRs, I remember him driving a green Granada Estate which seemed to require oil at frequent intervals. Then after my return to Galsgow we met again when he built the new VT area in the ground floor of the old building. Soem great evenings were had in the BBC club and the Taverna and later onto John Mckenzies flat where Bill Jarrand gained the tiel Bongo Bill. Rod is fondly rememv=bered by the Vt staff who were around at the time and a few of us raised a glas in his memory at our annual get together which took place at the same time as his funeral.
He was great to work for and with rest in peace Rod

Rodney and I have been close friends since the mid 1950’s and have enjoyed many a great adventure together. He made lifelong friends and was always keen to give them a helping hand, whenever needed. He enjoyed solving problems – his enthusiasm and thoughtful mind often found solutions to tricky issues. He was a very kind, likeable person with varied interests that ranged from canal restoration to boats to radios to cars. My children grew up with his and they loved getting to see them. Good health allowed Rodney to enjoy life until just before Christmas 2024.
Rodney, you will be sadly missed. Love Tony and the family

Rod was a valued friend for over 50 years. Firstly as a colleague in SCPD in the BBC and then meeting at Shepperton.
I also remember when asbestos was the answer to a wide range of construction problems, before people started to realise its delayed dangers.

Rod was my mentor at the BBC over 40 years ago. As my Project Manager, he introduced me to the concept of Empirical Engineering. Since that time we have remained great friends. Rod was an inspiration to us all - a kind; very talented and thoughtful gent.
Taken far too soon. You are sadly missed already. RIP Rodders.
