I didn't really see much of Rod at work, he was with VT and I was with telecine, until the two sections were combined and we shared an office. I remember him once supplying a "heart and lung transplant" for the office fridge from his "tailboard supplies". He was always very cheerful and he accepted his fate with his usual pragmatic approach.

On September 22nd, Rodney Smith, left us, having first felt "wrong" during the previous December.
He left behind the worries and the depression of the death sentence that is mesothelioma (yet to be proven absolutely) - cancer of the membranes in the chest which surround all of the internal organs, particularly the lungs. It's inoperable, because it is so general in its nature, and it does not respond well to any available treatments.
Mesothelioma is caused by exposure to asbestos, which was rife in the service passageways of the buildings in which Rod worked for many years. It is notoriously difficult to diagnose conclusively, and such diagnosis is usually only completed post mortem.
His children did their best to support him. His neighbours went well beyond what we could ever have asked of them to assist. His carers, once Rod was persuaded of the sense of accepting outside help, made a huge contribution and helped maintain his independence far longer than might otherwise have been possible.
He left on his own terms. He was at home, and he was not in any pain.
He worked for the BBC for nearly three decades. Everything you have ever watched in colour on BBC1 or BBC2 in the analogue days was broadcast through systems he had designed and probably had a hand in building.
He leaves behind family and friends he loved dearly and who loved him in return.
