We were deeply saddened to hear of Mike’s passing. For 27 years he was our wonderful next door neighbour, always ready with a kind word and a helping hand. Mike quietly kept our street in order, tidying bins, looking after them when neighbours were away, and doing whatever needed doing to make life easier for everyone.
We will never forget the day our drive began to flood and Mike stepped in without hesitation. While I stood helpless and in tears, he used his pump to stop the water getting inside before rescue arrived. That selfless calm in a crisis showed exactly who he was. The pump he later passed on to us is a lasting reminder of his generosity and practical care.
I loved his sense of humour - our front garden chats always left me smiling. We will miss seeing him out on his daily walks with Scooby and Toby, coming back from shopping, sweeping the drive so meticulously and those little catch ups that kept us connected. It was such a warm sight to see him at the front door to welcome and say goodbye to his children and grandchildren; those family moments were always a pleasure to see.
Mike’s warmth, thoughtfulness, and quiet strength left a lasting mark on us. Please know our thoughts are with you all at this difficult time.

  • Oh — sorry, autocorrect; of course I meant Scooby and Teddy. So perhaps I could also add now that I was so lucky to have one of those little front garden chats with Mike just a week before he passed away and only a few days before we went on holiday. He had me rolling with laughter as he gave hilariously earnest advice on surviving a long haul flight: a cheeky tipple here and there - teasing me about packing a flask and swearing it was the secret to happiness at 35,000 feet. He waved his hand, laughed out loud, and disappeared through his front door — it never occurred to me that would be our last chat. That warm, joyful, perfectly Mike piece of advice is the Mike I will always remember and miss; he left me with one final laugh, a tiny, unforgettable moment I’ll hold for years.
