It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of David, a devoted husband, father, and beloved grandfather (“Garg”), who peacefully passed away at the age of 81.

Born in London in 1943, David moved to Canvey Island, Essex as a teenager, where he would meet the love of his life, Margaret. They married in 1965 and recently celebrated their remarkable 60th wedding anniversary—a testament to their enduring love and partnership.

David was the proud father of three children: Melanie, Lisa, and Matthew. Above all else, he was a family man who valued education, mutual support, and the strong bonds that tie loved ones together. Through his firm yet loving guidance, he created the foundation for a tight-knit family unit that will forever carry his influence.

A chartered mechanical engineer, David spent his later career years at Shell Oil, bringing his technical expertise and dedication to his professional life. David had a lifelong passion for all types of trains, planes, and automobiles. He found great joy visiting the Duxford Air Museum, touring his old haunts throughout London, and southern England. He was a devoted supporter of Norwich City Football Club, attending home and away matches whenever possible.

His favorite moments were often the simplest ones: sitting peacefully in his garden, taking walks along the coast—particularly in Southwold—watching summer rain from one of the beach huts, sharing fish and chips, and traveling both near and far with his family. These memorable times, filled with laughter and love, will be treasured forever by all who knew him.

He is survived by his beloved wife Margaret; daughters Melanie and Lisa; son Matthew; and their spouses Gary, Mimi, and Diana. He was the cherished “Garg” to Emily. David’s legacy lives on in the strong family foundation he built and the countless cherished memories he created with those he loved most.

Just heard the very sad news, I have known Dave since we worked at Shell Haven in Essex many years ago , played in the Projects cricket team there, and then we both located to the Shell base in Lowestoft. Dave was a gentlemen, a lovely man to talk to, I am deeply saddened, and will miss him.

I only have great memories of David, this is so sad to hear. I witnessed his hard work and dedication at the Shell Gym and his unwavering support for me. We always kept saying we would meet up, I last saw him in Beccles by chance. Always kept in touch, but sadly not face to face. My sincere condolences, I'll miss you David x

Very sad to hear this news. We have not been in touch personally for quite some time but emails of news has kept us up with David's brave and long battle with his health. Memories of our time at Shellhaven together linger happily especially with David's sense of humour. Rest in Peace David and strength to Margaret and the family in the coming days, weeks and months.

While I did not know Mr. Wood, I have the immense pleasure of working with his daughter Lisa at Boston College, where she helps lead a dedicated faculty in their work of teaching and research. I can see how David’s extraordinary character has influenced Lisa, and for this, our community is grateful. We are holding all of you in our hearts, and hope that many happy memories make this time easier to bear.
Most sincerely,
Kate Gregory
