We used to love coming to visit the Motes when we were children. Our Dads would go to the pub for a couple of pints while us kids played and Mum and Sally did the lunch or played competitive Scrabble. Mike was always so jolly and fun and such a good friend to my Dad. Such happy memories. Sending my love to Ruth, James and their families x

I love and miss you grandpa, and will always remember times on the narrow boat, in the garden with the cats and spending Christmas together.

Michael and I, and our wives Sally and Gwen had been friends from our time in Hayes for well over 70 years. Since our early retirements in 1991 Mike and I tried to play golf once a week, most latterly 9 holes at Godstone followed by a spot of lunch at The Barley Mow at Tandridge where we would often recount our banking days muttering about Mr Angry of Purley and Mrs Objectionable of Oxted. Both Gwen and I will miss you, Mike as we do Sally. God bless, you were a good old scout.

  • Thank you Zoli for your kind words, Princess will have stories to tell for ever about Michael. You are right, we were so lucky to have your mum looking after dad, he really appreciated her. I believe you are lucky also, having such a loving caring person as your mother. I hope we will always remain friends. James

My sincere condolences to you all. I regarded Michael (and Sally) as among my best boating friends and have many happy memories of life with them on the "cut" and on the Thames. How could I ever forget that voyage I crewed down the Thames tideway many years ago undertaken much against Sally's wishes to position the boat in Brighton Marina as a sunbathing platform for James and Ruth. Starting with a raid on the boat by HM Customs ans Excise at Cadogan Pier in Chelsea and ending (for me at least) in the dark aground on a mudbank in the River Medway! Michael ever stoic, at least he was able to put his two-way radio training to good use by sending his first ship to shore radio message. And after all that I don't think they had the nerve to continue as far as Brighton. Anyway Michael, rest in peace reunited again with Sally. I know you'll be missed by your family and friends but at least you had a peaceful end. I'll be thinking of you all on 26th, I'm certain you'll give him a good send-off!

  • Thanks Chris for filling in some details of this trip that dad often spoke of. I think this adventure may have been the main reason Mum and Dad decided to go for the more peaceful option of a canal boat! Thanks for the donation as well.

Dear Grandpa, i miss you very much but will carry the memories i have of you and nanny forever, like our wonderful times on the canal boat (Whistler) and deciding who has the custard skin each time we met for dinner. There will forever be a hole in my heart from the most amazing grandparents I could ask for. Xxxx

Mike will be greatly missed. We were able to reminisce with him on our last visit on the fun, laughter and happy times we had with him and Sally over so very many years. This was partly due to the wonderful idea of the 'white board'

  • Thank you Becca, I know grandpa and nanny were so proud of you and all their grandchildren, as am I. It's a shame I couldn't share your recent graduation ceremony with dad. X.
