In loving memory of Anita Rosalind Mead who sadly passed away on 11th June 2025
Anita was born in 1944 in Canewdon into a cowman family (which is today what would be called a farm manager) and her early life was deeply rooted in the rhythm of farm work. As her father moved for his work, the entire family pitched in, and it was during these times that Anita, alongside her siblings, Gloria, Mary, Peter, Valerie and Sylvia, truly bonded. There were countless shenanigans, playful tricks, and a good deal of mischief. These early experiences forged strong, enduring connections which continued, especially as her parents, Peter and Lillian, became unwell far too soon.
In the late 1950’s, Anita worked at a sugar beet factory alongside most of her siblings.
Life took a turn when Anita’s family moved to Felsted. It was there, in 1960, on a double date with her sister Mary that she met a young man called Brian at a coffee bar in Great Dunmow. He was just 18, had a car, and he lived in Stebbing. Their courtship blossomed, leading to engagement and their marriage in October 1965. They began married life in a mobile home on the site of where Stansted Airport is now, before Brian joined the Essex Police force. The couple moved between several police houses as part of his postings, before finally settling in Hockley. There, they bought a home and later built one of their own
Sandra was born in 1967, followed by Sharon in 1971. Sandra and Sharon will forever cherish the memory of their mum always being there for them. Anita was truly a great mum and wife, dedicating herself wholeheartedly to her family, including her lovely son-in-law Steve. She meticulously looked after the home and her cooking and baking were legendary. Her daughters and granddaughters Lucy and Zoe, have fond memories of baking with their Mum and Nanny and having the honour of licking the mixing bowl clean. Anita developed a deep love and knowledge of gardening, learning the latin names of all her plants, nurturing her two greenhouses and enjoying trips to nurseries. She loved visiting beautiful gardens to take inspiration for her home, especially the botanical gardens in Maderia. She also loved taking Missy for walks in the woods or on the beach with Sharon. Beyond her family, Anita was employed locally with some cleaning work to earn extra money.
As Nanny to Lucy and Zoe, Anita created a treasure trove of memories. She would often walk over to their house and help them when they were small, and the girls will undoubtedly remember their trips to the Zoo and many other adventures with their beloved Nanny.
For many years, Anita was the epitome of a warm and generous host - her roast dinners were fabulous - a true highlight for anyone lucky enough to share her table.
Anita faced various health challenges throughout her life, including a double heart bypass. In 2024, as her health began to decline, she moved to Rosedale Court care home in Rayleigh, where they cared for her with kindness and love. Even on her most difficult days, Anita maintained her wonderful, mischievous sense of humour and enjoyed having a good laugh.
Today, we remember Anita as a devoted wife, a loving mother, a cherished Nanny, a dear sister, auntie, and a loyal friend. Her love for her family was the cornerstone of her life. She was a selfless, compassionate, and very kind woman, always supporting those around her. Anita was a truly genuine and lovely woman, and leaves behind a huge "Anita-shaped hole" in the lives of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and we will remember her with love ❤️
