In loving memory of Gwendoline Florence Wallis who sadly passed peacefully on Saturday 5th July 2025 aged 91 years. Departing from Grey Gables at 12.30pm for 1pm service at Barnby Moor Crematorium returning to the Traveller's Rest after the service for buffet and drinks all welcome.
Mother, Aunt, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Wife, Friend and confident. Gwen was Many things to many people.
Compassionate, Understanding and Sympathetic whilst being to quote a dear friend : "amazing, fiercely independent, forthright but kind and caring"
born in Bermondsey London to Bert and Flo in 1934 she moved with the family to Bexley in Kent in 1935 attended the local schools through the war years and rationing she still had pen friends from these days.
Starting work in Oxford street in 1950 in a florist shop she worked in this field until meeting her future husband Tom who was delivery man for the greengrocers next door they moved to Canterbury then to Southampton where they started a family together in 1956. During this move Gwen changed her profession to nursing in 1955 , eventually working at Southampton General in the children ward and she was friends with the nurses she worked with throughout their lives.
1970 saw a move to Harworth near Doncaster Grey Gables and then the Coach House Throughout this time she made many new friends and although disabled since the early 70s kept herself busy with the things she loved. Her Garden and Plants, Her coach holidays where she made many friends, Clic computer Club again meeting many people that remained friends throughout her life. Gwen was always there to help friends and family with business paperwork and organisation and again made many friend s from the various venues and businesses she participated in. Her years in the gliding clubs and her keen interest in aviation created or found her a whole new set of friends and family were always amazed at the number of Christmas and Birthday cards she would give and receive.
all in all in Mums words to both myself and my Son Chris her eldest grand child in a letter to be opened on her death written in 2013 :
i wish to be cremated and ashes scattered on an airfield of your choice. Just let me go ,
Think good thoughts.
Take care of yourselves and live life to the full!!!!
I did the best I could with my life and I have many happy memories, some you will know about and some you will not,
I had some great times many of them still bring a smile!!!!
If I had a rule of life to pass on it would be " To thy own self be true" The down fall is to believe the untruths that sometimes have to be Told
With this I will say my Goodbye G xxxxxx
Mum was ill at the beginning of this year and spent 7 weeks in hospital ,this left her very frail and unable to walk. Mum decided that she wasn't going to endure any further treatment from hospital and elected to stay at home, having made great strides since February walking again with a frame around the house pottering and doing odd jobs. On the morning off the 3rd of July she collapsed whilst on the way to the bathroom having helped her back to bed she fell asleep shortly after and never regained consciousness, Mum required no pain relief and let her presence be known by squeezing the hands of her many visitors through this time until she passed peacefully at about 5.40pm on Saturday afternoon.
