It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a great soul, Graham John Hanson Boorman. He died peacefully in his bed at home on the 11th of June 2025 aged 79. He had unfortunately been diagnosed with advanced pancreatic cancer only a few weeks previously.

Graham was the eldest of four children born in 1945 in Derby. Graham always had fun memories of his childhood and he had a shop and enquiring mind. After school he had a career in engineering and worked for most of his life in telecommunications engineering firstly with the GPO and then with British Telecom Following his engineering career he went on to have several other fulfilling occupations. He retired some 20 years ago.

He met his one true love Susan in 1967 and was married the following year. They enjoyed 54 wonderful years of marriage until Susan sadly passed away three years ago. They had three children, David Louise and Emma, and seven wonderful grandchildren who they adored greatly.

Graham was interested in just about everything. He had an inquisitive but sceptical personality. There was nothing that he would not turn his hand to, and he was a very practical man. I have fond memories from my childhood of Graham being able to fix just about anything that was broken!
Graham loved to travel. He has had many wonderful holidays with his family, and in recent years with his lovely Susan his favourite place to visit was Madeira.

It was a great privilege to know Graham. Although he was my father and dearly loved he was also a great friend and mentor. He passed on a lot of wisdom to me and to others. He was such a kind and gentle man . I don’t remember him ever getting cross for long, and he was known for going out of his way to help others. He had such an infectious smile. I am sure you all have your own special memories of Graham who was truly a wonderful man who I had the joy of knowing. I hope you will be able to share some lovely memories on this page.

Graham had a deep Christian faith which he shared with his wife Susan. He had a great love for God and had reassurance of his salvation. In recent times he was looking forward to being reunited with his darling wife.

I do hope as many as possible of you will be able to attend his funeral service to celebrate his life. The service is scheduled for 11.30 on Thursday 10th July 2025 at West Hallam Methodist Church, High Lane West, DE76JN. This will be followed by a grave side prayer as he is laid to rest at Park Cemetery, Ilkeston, DE75HT.
There will be light buffet and refreshments at West Hallam White Rose cricket club DE76HE, at 13.00 for his loved ones to meet, reflect and share their memories.

Graham wished for the day to be one of celebration of his life and as such requested that people wear colourful clothing. However, there will be many who knew Graham, who will not be able to attend in person and I would invite you to share any thoughts and memories on this obituary page.

Graham had expressed that any donations should not be spent on flowers but to be given to charitable causes in order to advance understanding and treatment of the conditions which affected him which were pancreatic cancer and Alzheimer’s dementia.

We invite you to follow the link to find details of the service, Just giving pages and the opportunity to share your thoughts and condolences.

With much love and prayers,

David, and family of Graham.

POEM FOR DAD
By Em xxx

To have you as my dad is a gift
I’ll always treasure,
A life of love and support, that will stay with me forever.

A gentleman, and a gentle man through and through.
Brave,clever,kind,generous and true

You lit up a room with your warm wide grin,

A smile so bright, it drew people in.

Determined, thoughtful, full of grace,

With laughter and strength in equal place.

An engineer with a gifted mind,

Who built with love and skill combined.

No task too hard, no job too small,

You faced each challenge and gave your all.
And when the path was not clear yet,

You’d say these words we won’t ever forget:

“There are no problems my beauty,
Just solutions we haven’t found yet.”

You taught me strength, to chase my dreams and try
,
You encouraged me to reach for the sky.
To keep the faith, stay focused and strong, especially when things went wrong.

As Grandad, you were just the best,

I could see the pride burst from your chest.

Side by side you played, built and mended,
In the garage and under cars
Your knowledge transcended.
Teaching everything you knew calm and wise,
With patient hands and guiding eyes.

You loved to talk, to laugh, to share,
striking chats up EVERYWHERE!
And Madeira was your happy place
With Sunshine flowers and gentle pace.

Three years without Mum,-your darling Sukie Sue,
The love you shared was so deep, rich and true.

A bond so rare, a match so right,

Two hearts, one soul, each other’s light.

And now you're resting in her arms once more,
Together again, just like before.

You voice, your laugh, your warmth, your way
Will be with me each moment of every day,
It will lift me up and guide my way,
Your legacy that’s here to stay.

And now, as we prepare to part,

I hold you closely in my heart.

Our favourite poem Dad, that rings so true

And captures you in all you’d do.

I’d like to read it and make you all smile as we hold his memory for a while.

************
‘Smiling is infectious’.

Smiling is infectious;
You catch it like the flu.
When someone smiled at me today,
I started smiling too.
I passed around the corner, and someone saw my grin,
When I smiled I realised I’d passed it on to him.
I thought about that smile, and then I realised it’s worth.
A single smile just like mine could travel around the earth.
So if you feel a smile begin, don’t leave it undetected.
Let’s start an epidemic quick and get the world infected!
