This Man

He is not one who yearns for renown
He does not aspire to be the toast of the town
He is a quiet achiever in his own quiet way
He doesn’t boast; he doesn’t say
This quiet man

This man of few words is happy in his life
Devoted to his dog and loving his wife
He rises early to work every day
He is skilled and enjoys how he earns his pay
This quiet, accomplished man

He is passionate about his football team
He follows them avidly chasing their dream
At matches he effortlessly acquires friends
Not with words but with presence and mutual intent
This quiet, accomplished, passionate man

He’s very particular about what he wears
Clothes are something about which he cares
As is music and he has an impressive selection
Of vinyl, shelves upon shelves, a valuable collection
This stylish, quiet, accomplished, passionate man

It’s possible people may not be aware
That he is so brave, because he doesn't share
The discomfort he suffers as he never complains
He prefers to be a man of restraint
This courageous, stylish, quiet, accomplished, passionate man

He carries his parents’ genes with a degree of pride
He couldn’t hide he’s their son even if he tried
With a glance or an expression, sometimes a yawn
You can see from where his heritage is drawn
This tall, courageous, stylish, quiet, accomplished, passionate man

When you know him well you are not surprised
By his razor sharp humour so be advised
He may not indulge in the sound of his own voice
But every word he utters is a careful choice
This witty, tall, courageous, stylish, quiet, accomplished, passionate man

Similarly know this, he is someone who cares,
About people and about being fair
This good, witty, tall, courageous, stylish, accomplished, passionate man

Chris and I were friends at school but became much closer during our two years at college in 76/77. I don’t think either of us had much appetite for further education, witnessed by the fact that we spent most of our ‘A level’ study time playing poker dice, table tennis and planning our next trip to watch live music. As two lost souls from Petersfield we were quickly drawn to two other guys from Havant who were in a similar predicament and we became the four Amigos - Chris Richard Paul and myself.
Chris and I had a common interest in music, in particular the punk rock scene. We both loved the Stranglers, Clash, Generation X, Ian Dury etc and travelled all over the South and London to watch these bands and many more. On a return leg from Brighton we had a nightmare journey when we both fell asleep on the train coming back to Portsmouth. When we finally woke up from our slumber the train was heading back to Brighton so our only option was to jump off at Havant. By this time it was gone midnight meaning no more trains so we had no choice but to try and hitch hike home up the A3. From memory there was a lot more hiking than hitching, and by the time we got back to Petersfield it was nearly dawn and raining hard. We parted at Cranfield Rd. and the next day we were both struck down with heavy colds and missed a few days of college - so on reflection it wasn’t a complete disaster.
I was last in touch with Chris about a year ago when we enjoyed reminiscing. I like to think our friendship made those two college years
bearable, and for sure we both had some very happy memories of our travels.

I will forever be in awe of your calmness and strength in the face of such adversity. I'll miss our WhatsApp calls - what was said on the calls stays in the group :) rest easy my friend.
