In loving memory of Jean Cooper who sadly passed away on 7th June 2025

Jean was born in Sanquhar in Dumfries and Galloway and would tell anyone that it is the home of the oldest working Post Office in Great Britain. She was the youngest and last survivor of five siblings and a very proud Scot. During World War II Jean lived in Oldham for a time, later the family returned to Scotland and lived in Maybole and then Dailly in Ayrshire. Jean trained as a nurse in Ballochmyle Hospital.

After getting married Jean moved to East Kilbride, Scotland’s first New Town, located close to Glasgow. Jean worked at the Samaritan hospital in Glasgow before moving to Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride as a Registered Nurse. She then left to become a District Nursing Sister working in East Kilbride. She was medically retired in the early 1980’s but was very proud that she worked for the NHS.

Jean moved from Scotland to Kirk Hallam in 1991. This move was to be near both of her daughters as she needed support due to her declining health. Just before she was 60 she moved to a bungalow in Sandiacre and she loved living there. Until recently she regularly attended Pastures Community Church and her Christian faith was a comfort and important to her.

Jean had two daughters. The elder Joan who is married to Anthony and has two cats that Jean was fond of. Her younger daughter Elizabeth is married to David and they gave Jean her much loved grandsons Jon and Rob. Jon is married to Abi, they have four children, Alyssia, Alasdair, Ciaran and Ewan. Rob is married to Kathryn, they have three children, Zac, Jamie and Lucas.

Jean loved her family very much; she cared and looked after them when she could and was so proud of their achievements. She was a much loved Mum, Granny and Great Granny and will be greatly missed by all the family.

Jean requested that there are no flowers but anyone who would like to give a donation in lieu of flowers can this be made to Canaan Trust. This Christian Charity was supported by her Jean for many years as it helps those who have the misfortune to find themselves without a roof over their head.

Will always remember Granny, with great affection. Recollections of the many family times, we enjoyed together with our daughter Abigail & her husband Jon, their children, Elizabeth, Dave & Granny, are some of my favourite lasting memories. Rest in eternal peace, Jean ❤️
