In loving memory of Ursula Maria Thompson who sadly passed away on 20th April 2025 after a long life and a mercifully short illness. A much-loved mum, grandma/nanna, great-grandma and friend, she lightened up a room with her ready smile. It could be said that her main passions in life were playing bridge and making people happy. Her generosity, positivity and encouragement all helped to put others at ease in her company. Joining the Nottingham Bridge Club in the 1970s led to her third passion, as it was there that she met her future second husband James Thompson. They had a blissfully happy 31 years of married life together until James' death in September 2011. During this time they travelled the country playing at bridge conventions, visited many countries on holiday, and spent precious time with family and friends. At the age of 97, having spent the previous 13 years living at home in Nottingham on her own, she chose to move to a care home in Southampton to be close to her daughter Dee and partner John. As well as compassionate caring and support, Speedwell Court provided her with companionship, interesting activities and the opportunity to practise her Christian faith again. She will be missed by all who knew her.

I will remember Ursula for her kindness and generosity. What an amazing legacy, 99 years of living. We are so lucky to have her in our lives.

We feel very privileged to have had Ursula in our lives since joining the Thompson family, marrying our father James in March 1980, just 8 weeks before our own wedding! She always had an amazing charisma, with that lovely smile, she was always so kind and generous to everyone. She loved all the family and they loved her. We are so delighted that she met James, it was so good that they had the mutual interest in bridge, as he was truly obsessed by it! Ursula was always so efficient, acting initially as his secretary and then as his travel companion and organiser.

She was a marvellous step mother, step grandmother and great grandmother to our children and they have wonderful memories of visiting her at Longbeck Avenue. She could produce smoked salmon sandwiches with 15 minutes notice even in her nineties!!

We have also had the benefit of having Dee, John, Patrick, Sarah, Jessica and Sophie in our lives, as part of the wider family. It has been lovely to meet up at family events and hopefully we will continue to do this. A bit daunting for them as there are so many in the Thompson family!

We last visited Ursula in January, she still had her amazing smile and had really embraced life in Speedwell Court, the staff obviously really loved her.

She will leave a big void in so many lives, what an amazing person we will all miss her, but she will remain a true inspiration to us all.

Ursula has been an important part of our family, since she joined it almost 50 years ago. We all were very fond of her; she put family first and showed us so much love. She was very considerate towards others, as can be seen by the way people wanted to help her, especially as her own life became more difficult in the last few years. Ursula could be really decisive at important moments and steer her life in a different direction; put another way, she could reinvent herself. We are so thankful that Ursula came into our lives and she will always have a special place in our hearts.
