In loving memory of Tony Creissen who sadly passed away on 24th March 2025

Chris Bell wrote

My first memory of Tony’s sense of humour was when Yvonne and I asked to talk to them both: I wanted to ask him for his permission and blessing to marry Yvonne. I was nervous, and had just started into it when he interrupted me and said “What do you want? Is it money you want to borrow?” Momentarily thrown off my balance, the twinkle in his eyes showed me he was joking! As it turned out he’d already guessed what I was going to say, and he unreservedly gave us both his permission and his blessing.

He was very down to earth, and supportive too. When Yvonne and I were considering buying our first house that needed a lot of work, after he’d taken a look I asked him how much effort it’d take: I was left in no doubt when he replied “a bucket of blood and a bucket of sweat”! I had never renovated a house before, and had no builder skills, but naively took on the renovation including working on the kitchen to move the back door and put in a new window. When I’d completed that work, he offered to come and do the tiling for us. It was some time later that I discovered that he’d needed two inches of plaster just to get the wall vertical!

Tony was very generous with the family, and when he would get paid for a particularly big job, would take us all on holiday somewhere. I remember three of these in particular: Spain, Disney World Florida and Las Vegas. Each were memorable for different reasons: Spain because it was the first after we were married, Disney World because we could never have afforded it ourselves and all three of our kids thoroughly enjoyed it, and Las Vegas for the flight that he and I took over the Grand Canyon.

I will remember Tony with much affection, and appreciation.

I first met Tony 25 years ago at the house he and Gay shared with Jo in Croydon, he was on his hands and knees in one of the many bathrooms, one hand (the right one) firmly fixed into a bucket of grout and a trowel in the other, he greeted me with "nice to meet you", "you will have to make do with the left hand I’m afraid" as he put in a firm handshake to this new boyfriend of Jo’s.. ‘

Soon after that meeting Tony and Gay moved to Spalding, and Jo and I would frequently visit them, one occasion firmly sticks in my mind, I had convinced Tony to go to a fishing show with me, but unfortunately he had a fall just before we were due to leave, so I went solo and due to him not being there I managed to get 6 points and a huge fine for speeding around the Lincolnshire country roads. I ended up in court and Tony was there by my side, telling the clerks I was a good guy and he doesn’t usually speed and that I should be let off.. He was there for me many times since..

Building brick walls together, sometimes because he had hit them with his huge car! You will all remember that car, he was so proud of it, a brand new 7 series BMW that to me signified he had made it in life. From the early days of ‘See Through Windows’ to ‘Tiles of Croydon’.
As well as teaching me to brick lay we did many tiling projects together. In fact Any building projects I only had to ask him and I then knew how to do it and correctly and often with Tony by my side.

Every time I work on a project, I will always remember him telling me how to do it.. and his wise words "don’t pay someone else to do something that you can do yourself".

It wasn’t just practical advice he was good at, there was parenting do’s and don’ts, always listen to the boss and earn the money! He loved to hear about my random side hustles.. In later years when he was frailer, he would still make the effort to come out with two coffees and some biscuits and sit with me when I had my break doing the gardening. Old stories would be told, you all know them..

I loved those times with him.

Rest in Peace Tony x

  • Such a beautifully written and heartfelt message Adam. Tony was a lucky man to have you as his son in law, and he knew it.
