Les was a wonderful father, and his family will miss him dearly. However I will no longer have to live down his tales of my feeding him my half-chewed bread as a delicious lunchtime treat, for which I am grateful.

Fond memories of a kind and gentle man who had the utmost respect of those whose lives he touched.

Les was an inspiration, a wonderfully talented academic with such a lovely sense of modesty.

Love and best wishes to Christine, Rob and James.

A husband and a father of whom you can all be so very proud.

It was so sad to hear of Les's passing. He was a super and friendly neighbour even helping with some admin for my mum only a few months ago. He will be missed.

Fond memories of Les will never fade. We first met about 1965 where we were each u/g's at Exeter in the economics department (in adjacent years). I recall his twinkly eyes and grin from those days. Later we met up again in 1977; he was at Exeter in economics but really doing econometrics. I had just been about 7 years at Southampton and Louvain la Neuve and Les and Chris (his wife) were huge helps in settling in York with a young baby.
Les obviously made significant contributions to each area of academic life: to econometrics (mainly theory) and to helping many students. He also had a lively sense of humour and an energetic love of family life. My family will never forget him.

I was so sorry to hear of Les's death. I'm not a statistician so cannot add to the many warm comments on him professionally, but know how highly Mike regarded him. I remember with great fondness those early years when so many of us in Economics had our first children. best wishes to you and the boys Chris.

Many lecturers from my MSc year in York will live long in the memory, and Les Godfrey was certainly one of them. He helped make statistics click for me - finally all of those symbols made sense and had real-world applicability. I was lucky enough to still see him on the occasional walk around the village. He won't have remembered me as one of his thousands of students, but I hope he knows that every one of our polite 'hellos' carried a huge amount of deep respect and gratitude from me.

Les Godfrey was not only a brilliant scholar but also a really good person. He was kind, considerate, warm-hearted and very easy to get along with. I shall cherish my memories of him for as long as I live. We first met at a seminar in Manchester in the early 1970s and we got on really well from the very beginning. I only wish I could have seen more of him in more recent years. I was proud to be one of his friends.

I first knew Les as an exceptional teacher - with his carefully crafted lectures written out in precise longhand on the blackboard! I went on to know him as an inspiring and supportive colleague in DERS. Very sorry to hear of his passing. Julie and I send our best wishes to Chris and the family.

Like so many York students, I learned econometrics from Prof Les Godfrey - he was a patient teacher even when he had to teach my cohort from 4.15 to 6.15 on a Friday. I remember him as super-intelligent but also friendly and kind. Many condolences to Chris and the family.

What a legend! Les was the kindest colleague, always willing to chat and genuinely interested in what you had to say, always had a smile on his face. My first office was opposite Les, I learnt many a thing about obscure music from him. Thank you for being the wonderful soul you were. A true gent. RIP x
