We bought an office building on Canal Street in 2008 and the News House became our after-work local, so it was pretty inevitable that Pete would become a regular drinking buddy. Pete was always a charmer and of cause made time to chat to Tricia. For myself, as a lifelong Blade, Pete tolerated my football following and it only became slightly problematic when United knocked Forest out of the cup or beat them in a promotion battle - and if it was the other way around, Pete would delight in ribbing me. In recent years we’ve retired and moved away, with only occasional visits to Nottingham, but when we do we’ve made a particular effort to visit the News House to bump into Pete for a drink and a chat. Pete was always great company; generous, caring, interested. He was a good friend. He will be greatly missed.

Our family has lost an absolute legend, I don’t even have the words to describe how much of an amazing grandad you’ve been to me. I loved dancing on your feet and ruining your afternoon naps by clambering all over you or tying your laces together when I was little, and you did too. I miss your rubbish jokes, you winding grandma up about her dinners and your beaming smile whenever you saw us. You always cared and asked about my life, even if you couldn’t understand my response because I speak too fast. I love and miss you so much grandad Pete xxx

I met Pete when we both teenagers in the late sixties and immediately became life-long friends. The thing about Pete was that even if you lost contact or didn't see him for a decent period of time, the next time you did was as if it had been merely a matter of days.

Following Nottingham Forest has been a burden we've shared, and traveling to watch them all over country, be it in the late-60s on a Bartons bus from Huntingdon Street bus station, or during the '70s in his Capri was always a joyful event with Pete as a companion, irrespective of the final scoreline which, more often than not in those earlier times was a defeat.

There are many Pete Martell anecdotes I could share, but this isn't quite the place or the occasion. What I can share however is that if ever you felt a bit low or just generally fed-up with things, a half-hour (preferably over a pint) in Pete's company
would be guaranteed to cheer-up the rest of
your day.

To sum-up the bloke, the Pete Martell I knew was a complete one-off in tetms of his personality and character. RIP mate.
