In May 1976 our family, the Midgley's, moved into 79 Heybeck Lane.
My mum, Margaret, Dad, Howard, myself, Sally & my sister, Sarah were very lucky to have such good neighbours as Mary, Norman & Sally.
Mary loved horses, cats & most other animals. Me & Sarah spent many a time down at the stables helping to muck out, put the straw down etc etc.
Mary & Norman loved going on caravan holidays. They had their own touring caravan which they kept next to the stables & Mary would make us a picnic up to have in there so we felt like we were on holiday. The potted meat from Farrahs in Morley were the best sandwiches.
Mum & Mary were the best of friends & always there for each other.
When there was a Farmers lunch or day trip out their names were always on the list, sometimes my grandma came along too.
Sally, myself & Sarah went to the same High School in Wakefield & when Sally was old enough she used to drive us to school. We used to love that.
Sadly Norman passed away far too soon but Mary coped remarkably. She had many friends & was in lots of organisations so could keep herself occupied if she wanted to.
Me & Sarah married and both had 2 children. Mary loved to see them & she was known as 'Mary next door'.
Sally met Neil & they made a new life together. They didn't live far away so could be there if needed.
Sadly Mary's health deteriorated late last year & she spent a few weeks in hospital.
She was able to come home & with the help of carers, Sally, Neil & mum she managed to be comfortable in her lovely bungalow right up until her final days.
Mary will be missed by us all but remembered fondly as a lovely lady, neighbour & friend.

Our Mary

RIP Mary Naylor – you have been a constant in some of our lives for circa 90 years and will be sadly missed, albeit you will live on in our memories. Memories of very happy times which we will remember fondly, individually and as a family. My Mum, Doreen Tattersfield (nee Brooke) has known Mary the longest – friends from very early childhood, with my Mum often telling stories of the lovely and frequent days they spent horse riding. The two of them and sometimes others getting their horses ready, taking a picnic and going out for a full day into the countryside. One of their favourites being a ride to Coxley Valley.

Mum and Mary spent much of their teenage years together and in time Mum married Brian Tattersfield and Mary married Norman Naylor. Together the four of them had a very happy social life and they spent many lovely times together at the Marmaville Country Club; The Cavalier Country Club and The Woolpack at Whitley to name but a few. In time, I, Susan came along and initially I probably ‘toned down’ their happy social life and a little later along came Sally so it was often the case that their social life involved Sally and I. Amongst other things I remember parties at their bungalow in Woodkirk and trips to the caravan at Scarborough. Happy days.

Sadly, Noman died some time ago, but our friendship with Mary continued, and as per the title at the top she was fondly referred to by us as ‘Our Mary’. In 2004 my Mum and Dad went to live in Spain and Mary was one of the first of their friends to go and stay with them at their home in Spain, and whilst Mum and Dad still live in Spain at 90 and almost 92, they do return to the UK every year and every year we have spent time with Mary and also with Sally and Neil. Our last visit was on the 25th October 2023, just before Mum and Dad returned to Spain. I am so pleased that I got a photo of Mum and Mary that day.

A lovely and dear friend to us all in different ways and our love, hugs and condolences to Sally and Neil, who cared so well for Mary, particularly in her later years. We are so sorry that none of us can be there for the Funeral service but are grateful that we will be able to watch it on livestream, and will be able to pay our respects in our own way. I and my husband, Colin will be watching from Thailand and Mum and Dad will be watching from Spain. Thank you for the memories, Mary.

After almost 50 years away in Australia. My husband and l were greeted with much warmth and kindness by Mary.
A beautiful lady never to be forgotten.
