Words are not enough. Stephen was a gent of all men. He always warmly welcomed you with a smile, infact I vary rarely didn't see him smiling which showed how much he loved life and those around him

Being one of John's closest friends I didn't know Michael as well as many others did but he and Jacqueline welcomed me into their fold because of my friendship with John. My heart goes out to Jacqueline and all the family. When we loose a loved one our world stops turning even if only for a moment.

You are all in my thoughts as well as Stephen who was a warm hearted kind man who would do anything for anyone given half the chance.

  • Thank you Barry. Sometimes my father’s methods were, shall we say, unconventional. But he believed that the ends justified the means, as long as they were properly directed and benefitted all concerned.

  • Thank you Wally. You have been a great friend to our family and many others around us for so many years. Many happy times spent together. Pip still talks about Bonnieux and how much fun he had cooking with you, as well as watching Val paint. Naturally, he had the white collar role!

One day, about 40 years ago, Steve decided that the computer which had been dumped in our bit of Marshall Road should be removed. So he put it in his car and took it to the tip! Then there was the time when a friend of his had a lawnmower problem. Every week Steve mowed his own grass then pushed the mower up the road. I could write a book! Steve was always kind, thoughtful and full of fun.
Anything he did, he liked to do well which is why it took John 22 years to persuade him to join Rotary. We enjoyed lots of trips away together and as for Status Quo concerts, didnt you hear us. And shouldn’t we be wearing flashy shoes on 31st?
Thank you for everything Steve. Rest in peace dear friend.

Au revoir Stephen, you leave us with so many memories of a friendship spanning more than 60 years. This photo shows just one of those memories, an Englishman in St Jean de Luz, 1985.

  • Thank you Enid & Jacques. You were great friends to my father - even if he did attempt to burn down the next-door farm in Vernon with a car boot full of fireworks that November 5th! Saint Jean de Luz was a place that we all loved. My mind goes back to when us four children played football in the road, one of us booted the ball over a hedge and Sandrine was sent to collect it. She knocked on the door and asked to get the ball back in French. The old lady who answered said, in English, “you speak French good” and Sandrine, with utter poise said back, in English, “thank you, I try.”

  • Oh I'd forgotten that John, thanks for sharing. The firework display was indeed a night to remember, it was the main topic of conversation in the village for some time afterwards. We're so sorry that we can't be with you on the 31st but we'll be there with you in our hearts. Xx

  • Thank you Rob & Di. Dad believed in what Rotary did very deeply and put a lot of his time and energy into it in his later years with no regrets at all.
