Mum died on 12th March 2023, almost a year since Dad died on 19th March 2022 Her decline with vascular dementia started about 5 years ago but accelerated over the last year and very much in recent weeks. She died peacefully and we - Gareth and Huw - were glad to be there.

She was well cared for at Beechdale Care Home over the last 8 months. Dad did a great job while he could. We were privileged to play our part, along with others in the care team when Dad himself needed help as prostate cancer become a problem.

Mum was born in Tredegar in 1936 to Watkin and Gladys and grew up in Ebbw Vale. She was very much shaped by Welsh Valley life, community, chapel and family. She studied Maths at Swansea University where she met Dad. A long engagement followed during which Mum started teaching Maths in Brynmawr. Married life led them to live in Crickhowell while Dad was a site engineer on the Heads of the Valleys Road (A465). Mum continued to teach before giving birth to Gareth.

The move to Nottingham followed where Dad took up lecturing in Civil Engineering at the University of Nottingham. Huw followed. Life was interweaved with Dad's work, Mum returning to teaching, church and family life at Cranston Road. Mum and Dad lived there for 58 years. Mum taught at Chilwell Comprehensive, then spent most of her teaching career at Bramcote Hills Comprehensive (formerly Grammar) school but also taught at Dagfa House and the Beckett School.

We had many great holidays together, several overseas as Dad's work opened up many opportunities to see the world including Hong Kong and North America. The joy of travel was shared by Mum and Dad. And we shared happy holidays with other families including the Hopkins - Phil, Dorothy and Chris.

During all this time Mum was the homemaker. She loved cooking and hosted many meals for family, church and friends. We have received messages from many who remember acts of love shown in the kitchen, words of support and encouragement and a few loving gifts along the way. And she fed 2 growing and strapping boys!

Retired life opened up opportunities to paint, upholster, have tea and cake at garden centres and look after and love grandchildren - Keziah, Joel and Thomas. Mum and Dad had many happy holidays together and in particular enjoyed many cruises be it down the Rhine, around the British Isles or up the Alaskan coast. Much time was spent with Margaret Brown, especially after Ernie passed. They continued to weave their Welshness into their loves and made many great friends in the Welsh Society. Diolch!

The Committal and Thanksgiving Service will be at 12.15 on 6th April in the Serenity Chapel at Bramcote Crematorium (Coventry Lane, Beeston, Bramcote NG9 3GJ). Lunch will follow at 1.45 at Strelley Hall (Main St, Strelley, Nottingham NG8 6PE). Once in the Strelley Hall property, keep to the left and follow the signs for the reception.

Do join us. If you can, please let us know using the 'Attend Funeral' button below.

Gareth and Huw intend to leave Mum and Dads' ashes in the hills overlooking Crickhowell, where Mum and Dad happily started married life together.

I’ve known Huw longer than any friends and spent much time from the age of 6/7 at 4 Cranston Road where there was always a warm welcome from both Marilyn and Gwynne. Whether it was playing in their lovely garden, making dens, playing on the very early computer games or taking a break from football or cricket matches on the ‘hills’ out the back a biscuit and drink was never far away. So many happy memories growing up. There was always help with any homework problems too. I remember Marilyn being particularly patient helping me with geometry and angles! She was I recall thankfully - as was Gwynne - on the scene sharp when I managed to bang my head falling off Gareth’s shoulders in the front garden when we were mucking about once. They checked me out and reassured me that I was ok. I didn’t see her so much after leaving school but when I did call in on Huw or bump into her at Bramcote shops there was also a warm hello and interest in how I was doing, how work was going or how Mum and Dad were. A lovely lady who I will miss and I know my parents will too. Diolch yn fawr x

We were privileged to live next door to Marilyn and Gwynne for 20+years.
They were the best of neighbours but much, much more than that, they were friends and we relied on each other and supported each other over the years.

We miss them every day, cheery chats over the garden fence and the odd glass of wine along the way too.
They are now reunited and at peace.
Thank you both for all the memories.
