As a headteacher Val was ground-breaking in her determination and innovation in finding positive ways to support some of the most disadvantaged and vulnerable children in the town, introducing Nurture Groups to Southend. She once told me "sometimes when the naughty children get sent to my office people think I am telling them off, but actually I am giving them a hug because that is what they need". I learned so much from her that still influences me in my work today

Val was the first Headteacher I worked for and she was a lovely lady. She was always professional but fun to be with and fair to her staff. However, more importantly she always had her pupil’s interests and well-being at heart.

Our family lives have intertwined for nearly seventy years and have given us all the opportunity to enjoy spending many holidays and special events together as our families grew in size.
