In loving memory of Gisela Remde who sadly passed away on 12th September 2015.
Gisela was a loving wife to the late Horst Remde, who was her carer until he passed on 9th April 2009.
Born in Erfurt, near Berlin, Gisela and Horst made their way to England in the late 50's with their son's Bernard and Peter. Horst brought his weaving loom expertise to England, and Gisela worked in the canteen at Woodrow Universal.
They lived in Crosshills for a few years whilst they saved up and made a new home in Steeton, where their third son, Mark was born.
Since her husband's passing, Gisela has lived at Lindisfarne Care Home in Haworth who took excellent care of her, and where she made many new friends.

I was eleven or twelve when Horst, Gisela ,
Bernd and Peter came to live in our house in Crosshills. Gisela had no English and she and my mum communicated by using a German to English dictionary. Gisela learned very quickly and so did her boys.
One of my abiding memories of Gisela is of her dressed in her dirndle. made of shot silk with the design of the frauenkirche of Munich woven in to it. she was a buxom woman who turned heads when she wore the dress of her country.
Gisela became a good friend to me..she was an excellent cook and after school she would give me a cup of coffee with carnation milk in it. Whenever I make myself a cup of coffee like that I think of those times....and of the sacher torte she sometimes made. Gisela gave me my first taste of gherkins, she gave me my first cookbook.
I will never forget her singing a liede for me...I found it in a book...
I had never met anyone before who could sight read music...she sang me Schuberts Roseline Roseline Roseline rot Roseline auf den Heide. Her favourite song at the time was a pop song called La Mer I think. .sung by a German pop star It could have been called Sailor...It began Seeman Las das Treumen,Seeman las den see...perhaps you still have the record?

I remember the families first Chrismas in
England and the Christmas tree alight with candles. I remember two or three years later the twinkle in her eye when after a bad night, a visit from the doctor and a diagnosis of pregnancy...
I asked her how did babies get there? she replied with a giggle " What goes up, has to come down"
I was still an innocent and what she said puzzled me. Not long after that the Remde family moved to Steeton and Mark was born.
