In loving memory of Walter Riggans who sadly passed away on 9th June 2022

Walter was a proud Scotsman who has travelled and lived in many places throughout his life. Scotland, Israel, England, America and many others. He had a thirst for knowledge, and as an academic was dedicated to a life of learning and teaching, always accompanied with his trademark wit and banter.
His teaching took him to All Nations Christian College, CMJ, Cliff College and most recently with the Congregational Federation.

Walter was a man of God and his faith was interwoven in every aspect of his life.

Walter was a father to four children, Robyn, Gil'ad, Jonathan and Tamar, to whom he was Abba. He was a grandad to five. A brother, a brother in law and an uncle.

Walter will be sorely missed and a service to mourn our loss but also to celebrate his life will be held on Friday 8th July.

The family would take great comfort in hearing your stories and memories and of course if you would like to attend the service you are more than welcome.

Mandy and Gareth Robbins and Longden donated £20 in memory of Walter

With grateful thanks to Walter for all his support.

What can I write or say about Walter that has not been written or said. My encounter with Walter was very short but the impact he made in my life during that short time is unmeasurable and will never be forgotten. Walter, was a kind, helpful and very supportive man. He would go beyond the call of duty to help and give support. He always sees the good side of humanity. A great man who truly love God. That Walter would be really missed is an understatement. May God continue to console all those affected by his death.

Walter will be greatly missed by all his colleagues. I miss his presence in the office at the CF along with his good natured humour, banter, and our shared morning coffees!
So sad that he is no longer with us.

Walter supervised my PhD at Cliff college for 6 years. I would like to say three things. First, he was interested in me as a person and had my best interests at heart. This came out in his pastoral care during some very difficult times. Second, without his keen mind and patient editing I never would have reached the viva. Third, I was always pleased to see him and we inevitably had a good laugh - especially after he had pointed out some errors.

A faithful servant of our Lord has passed on - truly we stand on the shoulder's of giants.

I came across this page quite by accident. This week I felt prompted to search the internet to see what I could find on Walter, as I knew he had written several books. The first thing I came across was this information on his funeral arrangements.

I have fond memories of Walter. I first met him in the late 1970s, as a 12 year old child, when he arrived as Assistant Minister at Kildrum Parish Church of Scotland in Cumbernauld. Although none of us were Church going Christians my parents really liked this young, funny, long haired guy who came to visit our family.
I remember making fun of his age as he seemed to me to be an ancient relic at 25! We played board games together and would talk for hours. He introduced my parents to Fleetwood Mac and Jesus.

Walter shared the gospel with mum in a way that she’d never heard before, being brought up Catholic. I remember her saying of Walter “I want what he’s got”. She accepted Jesus as Saviour shortly after and He would be her Rock as she steered our family through the suicide of my alcoholic father, a few years later.

My family now has a Christian heritage as my mum became a crazy evangelist for Jesus and wanted us all to experience her Lord and Saviour. Walter planted the first seed and there has been a rich harvest.

What a joy it is to think that Walter’s death is just a ‘promotion to glory’ for him but sadness for his family and everyone who knew him, as we learn to adjust to life here without him.

John 11:25 in the words of Jesus “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live”.

Walter… I’ll see you when I get there!

With sincere sympathy
